Sunday was a glorious autumn day in New York City, with a bright sun and moderate temperatures, so my husband and I decided to take a walk though the middle of Central Park in Manhattan to enjoy the fall foliage that had finally arrived!
In the mosaic above, from top left going clockwise, you can see a row boat on the lake, The Bethesda Fountain, The Falconer statue, a scene from The Sheep Meadow, the Trump-Wollman Ice Skating Rink, some fall foliage, and a section of the bedrock called "Manhattan schist" which is the foundation of most of Manhattan, and which allows tall skyscrapers to have a strong foundation.
This mosaic is comprised of the beautiful Bethesda Fountain "Angel of the Waters," and some of the sculptures of Bethesda Terrace, plus the Minton Tile ceiling in the Arcade. The Minton tile ceiling is made up of 15,876 elaborately patterned encaustic tiles handmade by Minton and Company, a leading 19th century ceramic manufacturer in Stokes-on-Trent, England. Originally installed in 1869, the tiles were recently restored after an extensive restoration project.
One never has to buy a ticket to a concert or a show when visiting New York, as all you have to do is walk through the park on a pleasant day and you will be entertained by all sorts of musicians, and mimes! We saw a jazz band, a Latin band, folk music, a Chinese lute musician, and a Hawaiian ukulele musician. We even saw a musical trio counting a large stack of dollars they earned in tips for the day!
Please come back on Wednesday, as I'll be showing more sceness from Central Park, including the mosaic memorial to the Beatle John Lennon.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great entry for Blue Monday meme. I love the photographs.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday.
Mine is up too.
It wouldn't be NY without Central Park, right? I can only think about how many times I saw it in movies, or read about it in so many novels, or listen to its name in so many songs........
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read the following parts, thanks Pat.
What a fabulous place to visit, but oh! the pigeons! I loved looking at your photographs. Thanks for sharing, and Happy Blue Monday!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colors! Hooray! I'm glad they finally showed up for you! That angel statue is amazing. The sense of the past in your pictures was very evocative.
ReplyDeleteTHank you for taking me on a tour through New York. I love all your photographs and stories that go with them. I have been to New York twice and it sure is my favorite city in the world. I would love to go again but I don;t think that will happen again. So now I tour with you every week.
ReplyDeleteHave a happy Monday
I'm so glad I found your site...NYC is the one LARGE city in the world that I want to come back and visit some more. I'm not a large city person and took a high school choir group there 3 years ago...I want to come back....thanks for sharing so much.
ReplyDeleteFantastic mosaics, and Central Park looks like a fun place to spend time.
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely here in the Northeast yesterday. I was wishing for it to last a couple of months more...but...will have to settle for as much as we get.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are lovely.
Glad you had a great day in the park.

ReplyDeleteHere's my first Blue Monday entry.
How fun! Thank you for sharing your beautiful photographs and taking us on the tour - it's more wonderful than I ever imagined! Lucky you to see it all in person!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day,
Zuzu
I love the pigeons perched on the angels wings. Very cool!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the pics. I'm a big fan of meticulous detail, so I really loved the tile work. This post was awesome!
ReplyDeletePlease join me in chasing fun with my son for Blue Monday!
Central Park is such a gift isn't it - just like your blog and the great pictures. Loved the girl with the orange getup on a pedestal.
ReplyDeleteI can think of few better ways to spend a glorious fall day than walking in Central Park. I miss my weekends in NYC--another time in my life. Yesterday was indeed a perfect day.
ReplyDeleteYou make the most visually exciting mosaics, Pat...Just thrill to all these views from the large to the small. And can't help but admire all the blue... Happy week, my friend :o) ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteAnother gorgeous post and lovely mosaic.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo's! I would love to walk through that park ♥ Happy Blue Monday!
ReplyDeleteCentral Park is quintessential NYC for me...wonderful mosaics!
ReplyDeleteI love the mosaics, it's fun to see the groupings and having the ability to click on each one to see more details. How great to have so many varying musical offerings at once. And the beautiful autumn leaves, oh my, they're so gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteWho does not like Central Park... such a FABULOUS place... le sigh... I NEED a trip East!!! GORGEOUS mosaic!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are really wonderful - the next best thing to being there. I hope you are having a wonderful Blue Monday.
ReplyDeleteLove the colours of the leaves.
ReplyDeleteOo Minton -yes they were bought up by Royal Doulton. Now that company has had recent trouble in the recession and I heard that the manufacturing was taken from England and the quality is different.
Central Park is so beautiful. My fondest memory of it is seeing a black squirrel for the 1st time there.
Beautiful images, Pat. Love the woodland fairy... and her nerve. It's one thing to have a musical instrument to "hide" behind, but to just stand there in the park... in a costume no less.
ReplyDeleteIf you're not being compensated as an ambassador for the NYC tourism bureau, somebody needs to make a phone call!
What a wonderful and perfect day to walk through Central Park, Pat. Your mosaics are beautiful! I have been there at least 3 times but I don't think I have seen it all!...Christine

Lovely post again. I wish I will visit New York some day soon
ReplyDelete~Gorgeous photos here Pat!
ReplyDeleteSomething is just so magical about Central park. ~Stunning!
Many Blessings, ~Melissa :)
I walk through the park every time I return to NYC.It was my old running place, hanging-out place, theatre place, concert place, boating place, skating place. One of my favorite places in the world. Thanks for bringing it back home to me.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures and what a beautiful time of year to be in Central Park!
ReplyDeletePeople don't realize how beautiful New York can be do they...especially in the Fall!
Oh thank you so much for this walk through the park. I love parks in the middle of a big city and what a lively place it was to be on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful mosaics!
ReplyDeleteCarolyn
Pat, what can I say, I Love New York!!
ReplyDeleteLovely virtual tour in your mosaic!
Wish I was there!
Definitely I will come back!
Sunday was a gorgeous day in New York! On Long Island, too! Your pictures make me want to schlep into the city! I love your NYC mosaics! Monday was also gorgeous, have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHow fun!!!
ReplyDeletem ^..^
Hi Pat, thank you for your visit and comment.
ReplyDeleteCats and Rosemary??
I don't think it is a good idea to let your cat eat it. The cat could be allergic. I don't know if it is poisonous to them, but just to be safe side, don't let him/her eat it. Cats will try to eat lots of things, both the good and the bad.
IMPORTANT- IF IT IS ROSEMARY PEA, IT IS POISONOUS TO CATS!!!
Take care,
Gisela
Got your flu shot yet??
We got ours last week!!
I've walked through Central Park in the Spring, but never in the Fall. These pictures depict beautifully the lovely walk the two of you had. The mosaics make it even more fascinating. Thank you for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteCentral Park is truly one of our country's greatest gems. Lovely photography, Pat!
ReplyDeleteI'm catching up with postings after spending three days in bed with a nasty cold that turned to asthma issues. Just getting back up to my old self and have missed all of my blogging friends. Hope to be caught soon and back to posting on my own blog. Hugs to you. Sea Witch
I studied every photo. There is so much going on in every shot it seems. The foliage is beautiful there. The leaves have seemingly turned overnight here...we still have a ways to go before we are at the height of color though.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos as always! And I never, ever saw that tile roof...I love it!! Add it to my (long and growing) list of things I need to see in my own city. :-)
ReplyDeletexo, Laura
p.s. Basil STILL growing!
I'd love a walk through Central Park, thanks for sharing Pat. You are so fortunate to live in such an awesome city! It looks beautiful in autumn!
ReplyDeleteOh Pat, how wonderful! It's almost a week later and I can't seem to remember a day when it hasn't been raining... Thanks so much for taking us along on your walk in the park. :)
ReplyDeleteStunning mosaics! Great photos...Thank you for sharing and have a beautiful Blue Monday!
ReplyDeleteI would like to be there too
