Central Park, Manhattan - Part One

All mosaics will enlarge when clicked on if you would like to see more detail

Sunday was a glorious autumn day in New York City, with a bright sun and moderate temperatures, so my husband and I decided to take a walk though the middle of Central Park in Manhattan to enjoy the fall foliage that had finally arrived!

In the mosaic above, from top left going clockwise, you can see a row boat on the lake, The Bethesda Fountain, The Falconer statue, a scene from The Sheep Meadow, the Trump-Wollman Ice Skating Rink, some fall foliage, and a section of the bedrock called "Manhattan schist" which is the foundation of most of Manhattan, and which allows tall skyscrapers to have a strong foundation.

This mosaic is comprised of the beautiful Bethesda Fountain "Angel of the Waters," and some of the sculptures of Bethesda Terrace, plus the Minton Tile ceiling in the Arcade. The Minton tile ceiling is made up of 15,876 elaborately patterned encaustic tiles handmade by Minton and Company, a leading 19th century ceramic manufacturer in Stokes-on-Trent, England. Originally installed in 1869, the tiles were recently restored after an extensive restoration project.

One never has to buy a ticket to a concert or a show when visiting New York, as all you have to do is walk through the park on a pleasant day and you will be entertained by all sorts of musicians, and mimes! We saw a jazz band, a Latin band, folk music, a Chinese lute musician, and a Hawaiian ukulele musician. We even saw a musical trio counting a large stack of dollars they earned in tips for the day!

Please come back on Wednesday, as I'll be showing more sceness from Central Park, including the mosaic memorial to the Beatle John Lennon.

I'm linking my post today to Mary at My Little Red House's "Mosaic Monday" Event and also Sally at Smiling Sally's "Blue Monday" event. Please visit their blogs today to find links to many other blogs participating in these wonderful events.

  8. It wouldn't be NY without Central Park, right? I can only think about how many times I saw it in movies, or read about it in so many novels, or listen to its name in so many songs........
I can't wait to read the following parts, thanks Pat.

  27. Your photos are really wonderful - the next best thing to being there. I hope you are having a wonderful Blue Monday.

  28. Love the colours of the leaves.

Oo Minton -yes they were bought up by Royal Doulton. Now that company has had recent trouble in the recession and I heard that the manufacturing was taken from England and the quality is different.

Central Park is so beautiful. My fondest memory of it is seeing a black squirrel for the 1st time there.

  29. Beautiful images, Pat. Love the woodland fairy... and her nerve. It's one thing to have a musical instrument to "hide" behind, but to just stand there in the park... in a costume no less.

  42. Hi Pat, thank you for your visit and comment.
    Cats and Rosemary??
I don't think it is a good idea to let your cat eat it. The cat could be allergic. I don't know if it is poisonous to them, but just to be safe side, don't let him/her eat it. Cats will try to eat lots of things, both the good and the bad.
IMPORTANT- IF IT IS ROSEMARY PEA, IT IS POISONOUS TO CATS!!!
    Take care,
    Gisela
    Got your flu shot yet??
    We got ours last week!!

I'm catching up with postings after spending three days in bed with a nasty cold that turned to asthma issues. Just getting back up to my old self and have missed all of my blogging friends. Hope to be caught soon and back to posting on my own blog. Hugs to you. Sea Witch

  45. I studied every photo. There is so much going on in every shot it seems. The foliage is beautiful there. The leaves have seemingly turned overnight here...we still have a ways to go before we are at the height of color though.

  46. Great photos as always! And I never, ever saw that tile roof...I love it!! Add it to my (long and growing) list of things I need to see in my own city. :-)
