My husband and I were able to attend the Yankee game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on August 4th, and we were hoping to see Alex Rodriguez become the youngest ever player to hit the much-coveted 600th home run. The Yankees were playing the Toronto Blue Jays and Shaun Marcum was the starting pitcher for the Jays, Phil Hughes for the Yankees.
We had just finished having lunch in one of the special lounges, which was located on the third base side of the field. It is located right under the mustard ad in the photo above. When Rodriquez's name was announced in the first inning we decided to wait in the lounge and watch him at bat instead of heading back to our seats, which were located between home and first base, at field level. It's a good thing we did! I took the following photos from that location.
Alex Rodriguez waiting for the 2-0 pitch. Derek Jeter was on first base and two were out.
He hit the ball hard and watched it sail into center field, over the wall into Monument Park in Yankee Stadium.
Rodriquez about to touch home plate after hitting his monumental # 600 home run!
He was first congratulated by Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter who scored ahead of him.
A-Rod being hugged by the Yankee Captain, Derek Jeter.
Alex Rodriquez being congratulated by the entire Yankee team.
He joined an elite home run club that includes Barry Bonds (762), Henry Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714), Willie Mays (660), Ken Griffey Jr. (630) and Sammy Sosa (609).
Rodriguez had gone 12 consecutive games -- 46 at-bats between home runs 599 and 600, and was in a 0-for-17 slump, so happily the suspense was finally over for him and Yankee fans! The Yankees ended up winning the game, 5-1.
Congratulations A-Rod!
On our way back to our seats we saw Yankee vendors selling this special T shirt commemorating A-Rod's 600 home run, so we bought one for our son who is a avid Yankee fan. We heard they sold out in two innings!
Wow Pat = those shots are fantastic. I bet you could sell them and your commentary to a magazine...maybe People magazine - why not give it a try? That must have been thrilling to be there and it's so lucky you stayed where you were!
ReplyDeleteSheila you are very kind! There must have been easily a hundred professional camera people taking hundreds of photos, plus tens of thousands in the stands! We were just happy to be lucky enough to see his home run in person. My husband saw Micky Mantle's #500 home run many years ago so this day brought back happy memories to him.
ReplyDeleteKirsten is a huge fan of A-Rod (has a shirt). Shhhh.. don't tell her boyfriend - together they are manic Twins fans! Fun post!

ReplyDeleteYou took great photos of A-Rod's big moment. Your camera must have a fantastic zoom. I bet the fans when wild.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great orange post! The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd - and you were there! Wow - what a day!
ReplyDeleteHi Pat! Here is something I never understood... but must confess never did to much to understand... ;))
ReplyDeleteMissing your comments at Blogtrotter Two, which is now showing a bit of Catalonia in Sardinia... Take pleasure in it and have a stunning weekend ahead!
WOW! I've just been to a baseball game in NY. Thank you for the trip. That stadium is huge and it sounds great to be able to have lunch and watch the game too. It is not a very popular game in Australia but I like it as it is similar to softball which I coached when I was teaching.
ReplyDeleteI bet is was great to be there. You got all those fans to wear orange. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteGo A-Rod!!! Well done him!! I'm none the wiser about baseball but by golly the stadium was packed and the excitement and anticipation were palpable!!
ReplyDeleteAnd you got the t-shirt!! Brilliant!
take care
x
WOW...what a moment... and look at that packed stadium! You photos really capture the excitement--fun to see... :O) Happy Day, my friend ((HUGS))
ReplyDeleteThrilling memories caught on your digital. We are BIG time Yankee fans at our house and were so excited to see your photos. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy Hubby was listening to the game on XM Radio & he called me & I put the game on TV. I saw the many reruns.
ReplyDeleteJust Love the Yankees!!!!!
So glad to see a security man got the ball & returned it & not someone to hold it up for ransom!!
Great photography!!
Love,
Marilyn
Great pictures, but I have to be careful and not get too excited. My Dad was always a White Sox fan and we were raised to always root against the Yankees unless a win would somehow help his team. Our neighbor would sometimes give my Dad tickets when the Yankees played the White Sox at home. He had a box right by first base and between innings the umpires would sometimes throw candy to us. They kept candy in their pockets. I doubt they can do that anymore, but I always liked the umpires because of the candy.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! How awesome that you got to see this!
ReplyDeletePat - You have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. What a fun experience for you both. Wonderful photos too.
ReplyDeleteSuper, super cool!!! We have been watching the games and waiting for this milestone...so glad that I at least got to see it on the big screen in our den..lol! Your pictures are fantastic.
ReplyDeletelove it,
ReplyDeleteenjoy home runs.
What amazing photos you got...of a most memorable game! How fun to have been there and taken it all in.
ReplyDeleteMy dad is a huge Blue Jays fan...so he may have been a tad less excited about it all.
What a memorable game for you to attend. Such a great orange New York post.
ReplyDeleteGreat job documenting a big moment in baseball history.

That's an experience you'll never forget! I'm so glad you went and shared the photos ...and the fun...with us! ♥
ReplyDeleteI'm with Sheila...what amazing photos, I feel like I was there!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, Pat. You never disappoint with that camera and commentary!!!!! Thanks for the wedding wishes..
ReplyDeleteWow, great photos Pat! How exciting to be there for such a history making achievement. I remember going to a Reds game - they were playing the Braves and I never thought I'd see my Dad root for them, but Hank was up to bat and he was hoping that he would break the record. Didn't at that game, but not too long after. Thanks for bringing back a fun memory! Kat
ReplyDeletehow exciting you were able to see such a historic moment! I have yet to go to the new stadium...maybe one of these days! US OPen is next for me in a few weeks..cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an exciting game! I'm orange with envy!
ReplyDeleteI am not a baseball fan, but was still so excited that you were there to record this big day. How exciting! Love & blessings from NC!
ReplyDeleteIt must be such an experience be there to attend the event. You know, being at a baseball game is one of my husband must-do-thing when (and if) we'll make it to NYC. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteyou won't forget. What a lucky day to be at the Baseball game.
Great photos, Pat!
ReplyDeleteIt's an AMAZING accomplishment and begs the question: which do you suppose is bigger, his talent or his ego? MWAHAHAHAHA!
Amazing that you were there to witness the end of his dry spell. And those photos? Fabulous.
ReplyDeletewonderful pictures! What an experience.
ReplyDeleteThough I'm not familiar with the team I love all those orange photos! What a great day!

Thanks for linking this.
The whole post just made me smile!

Wow, I can't believe you were at that game! I don't know anything about baseball but my supervisor is crazy about it. In fact, we watched that game (pre-recorded unfortunately) in our office and he explained to me about how big an event this was. All I have to say is that it must have been so exciting to have actually been there at the game and see it all happen :)
ReplyDeleteFABULOUS POST!!!!
