A Visit to EATALY in NYC


EATALY is a giant Italian gourmet food market and food hall located at 200 Fifth Ave. between 23rd and 24th streets in the borough of Manhattan, in New York City. When they opened in late summer there were lines of customers around the block waiting to go in to experience and shop in what is billed as “the largest artisanal Italian food and wine marketplace in the world.”  Now it was to be my turn to visit. (As always, all photos will enlarge when clicked on once, and then again when they open on a new page)


The New York City EATALY was created by restaurateurs Mario Batali, Lidia Matticchio Bastianich, and Joe Bastianich, and patterned after the original in Turin. Italy, founded by Oscar Farinetti.


EATALY features multiple restaurants and over 20 retail departments, most with their own dining areas. The seven prepared-food areas include Le Verdure (vegetable), Il Manzo (meat), Il Pesce (fish), La Pasta (pasta), La Pizza (pizza), I Salumi e I Formaggi (salumi and cheese), and Il Crudo (raw bar).


As soon as we entered EATALY, my husband and I bought an espresso coffee to enjoy at the Lavazza Cafe .


We admired all the exquisite looking varieties of pastries, panna cottas, crostatinas, and hand dipped chocolates in the Pasticcera (bakery).


The Salumi e Formaggi (meat and cheese) section has a wonderful selection of fresh Italian artisan cold cuts for sale...


....including fresh mozzarella being made on the spot.


Fresh pastas are also made daily.


Look at all the wonderful varieties of fresh pasta to choose from! We wanted to try them all but decided to buy just on one, which I'll show you at the end of this post.

There is also an extremely large dried pasta and macaroni section in EATALY with a dazzling array of brands, types, and shapes of imported pasta.


My husband felt like a proverbial "kid in a candy store" while he looked at all the different kinds of pastas!  Many were ones he remembered from his childhood in Italy. Since our supply of dried pastas at home was sufficient we didn't buy any on this visit, but it's nice to know that we will be able to come back and select one for a special dinner at home in the future.


We next visited the large Pane (bread) bakery.


Just look at the selection of fresh baked breads and focaccias available!  Many were still warm from the oven. The aromas from all this bread was delightful!  We couldn't resist, and made a selection to bring home.


We then looked at the offerings in the Macelleria (Meat Department)......


....and large fresh Pesce (seafood) department.


The Rosticceria has roasted meats and chicken, and some Cortoni (sides of cooked vegetables and pastas) to take out.


EATALY has almost every imported product needed for the preparation of authentic Italian food that you can imagine! There were isles and isles of olive oils from every region of Italy, fruit preserves, beer, wine, sodas, jams and syrups, capers, anchovies, grains and rices, sauces, honey, nuts, sweets and chocolates. Fresh dairy products were locally bought from Battenkill Creamery, Ronnybrook Farm and NY Milk.


There were even a selection of imported housewares and cookware for sale.....


....and a nice cookbook area to browse in.


Their fresh fruits and vegetable produce selection has all been purchased from local farmers.


The display baskets full of vegetables looked as beautiful as a still life painting.


EATALY's novel "Vegetable Butcher" received a lot of excitement from the press when the market first opened. If desired, you can have the vegetable butcher wash, clean and cut the vegetables that you purchase at no cost.  I would not mind having their services for something I find tedious and time consuming to prepare, like artichokes. The butcher stand also has items such as pre-soaked beans available for purchase.


There are many different dining areas located in EATALY, each one associated with a different food section.


There are fish, vegetable, pasta and pizza restaurants.


Manzo is the fine dining Italian steakhouse, and the only restaurant in EATALY that accepts reservations.


This is the wine bar. The EATALY wine shop is in a separate store next door. There are also plans for a 4,500-square-foot rooftop beer garden and brewery.  Eventually EATALY will be over 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurants all in one location!  Cooking demonstrations and classes, cookbook signings, and other special events are also offered on premises.


Don't forget to stop to have a cup of creamy gelato at Il Gelato before you go home!


EATALY is located in one of my favorite areas of Manhattan, in the Flatiron neighborhood.  I usually like to take a stroll in Madison Square Park when I am in this area, but today we decided to rush home with all our purchased goodies.


We had a quick drive over the Brooklyn Bridge....


....passing a view of an overcast Manhattan from the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Brooklyn...


....and then we were home again with our purchases.  We couldn't resist buying a loaf of rustic bread, a pound of fresh pasta, and some staples such as rice for risotto and organic cornmeal for polenta.


We chose a pound of EATALY's fresh Pappardelle pasta.


My husband dropping it one by one into the boiling salted water.


The papparedelle served with my home made tomato meat ragu....delizioso (delicious)!

All in all, my husband and I enjoyed our visit to EATALY. Now we have a better idea of what is available and next time we will be more prepared with a shopping list. We are lucky that we have excellent Italian markets in Brooklyn, from which we can shop, but EATALY offers us even more variety.  We'd also like to dine in a few of EATALY's restaurants in the future. My only complaint? It is so popular with both locals and tourists that it was very crowded. Open daily, from 9 a.m.-11 p.m, I will try to visit at an earlier hour next time to avoid the crush and long lines for service.  EATALY is definitely a must see place to visit in New York City and a definite gem for anyone who loves Italian products and food, and local fresh meats, seafood, dairy and breads.

  1. Pat. .this is one more reason I can give my husband for a visit to Manhattan. This place looks fantastic. I smiled because my husband loves his pasta almost as much as he loves me.   4. Pat, I've been waiting to go there hoping the crowds will die down, but I suppose with the holidays coming it will only get worse! I'll just have to brave it because your photos and story are making it irresistible. Did you take that skyline picture from a moving car?   5. Oh my gosh, this place is amazing!! And what great pictures you took, some of everything. I have never heard of it. And next time you go, I hope you post what you ate in the restaraunt. I'm thinking it would take all day long to get a good look at everything. How long were you there? That tall, very thin skyscraper building is something else. I wonder how it even stands up!! And the New York skyline, your picture looks just like a postcard! This makes me wish so much that I could visit New York, but I would spend all our money and go bankrupt, so better I stay in my small valley.

  6. To my husband and I this would be a real wonderland! We love Italian food, and I too would not have gone home without a nice hot loaf of bread. The entire post had my heart beating a little faster...thank you for the tour...we will absolutely have to go here in the near future!

    Yes, Linda, I took the skyline photo while we were driving home. I had my Nikon D60 camera with me, and it was on auto settings, so it captured the shot pretty well even though we were moving. There is always traffic so we weren't going all that fast..lol

    I'm from Canada close to Montreal, so we go to N.Y. a couple times a year. This will certainly be a MUST.

  16. Pat, I have been dying to visit Eataly since I read about it in one of my foodie mags. Candy store is right! If I could tear myself away from all that gorgeous bread and pasta, I'd certainly enjoy visiting the salumeria. I'd love to plan a trip just before Christmas to "flesh out" my antipasto. I'd better cash in some CD's first, lol.

  17. What a fantastic place! I have never seen anything like this and would love to visit it. Gee, maybe take a cooking class and learn how to really make spagetti without using Ragu. LOL! And the bread section - it's to die for. I wish we had one here in SE PA!

  21. Oh my goodness this puts my home backed humble pizza to shame!! LOL!!!! Wow!!! I love this place!! It's popular cos it's truly unique - everything Italian under one location - shopping, eating, dining, events.. wow!!!

    And it's also great that the food is guaranteed fresh and organic! I love the mozarrella cooked on the spot!! And the fresh pasta - my goodness! But look at the types of bread.

    I do like the idea of a vegetable butcher!! I think that would be my first stop!

    Thanks for a peek into what is truly unique and one of its kind!! It's brilliant to have this at your doorstep - I love that your husband was especially happy to be let loose in here! Awwww!

  25. Oh My Gosh----That EATALY is probably as large as the town of Crossville, TN... I have never seen an Italian place as neat as that one. I could spend about a million dollars in there. Thanks for sharing such an incredible place. WOW!!!

  28. OMG what an incredible place!! There's another place on my next NYC visit! I'd be stuck at the foccacia display buying some to eat in the park and if you look close you might see me in the line for gelato in that picture LOL.

  30. My daughter lives in DC and goes up to NYC quite often. Last weekend she took her daughter for her birthday. They did the overnight thing at the Museum of Natural History.

  34. What a thoroughly enjoyable trip that was! I could almost hear the noise of the crowd and smell the aromas wafting from the different shops. You know, we have nothing whatsoever even approaching such a place. It would be like a trip to food paradise!

  40. You keep giving me reason after reason to make another trip back east! This is definitely my kind of place. In fact, once I get there I may never leave. Your photos(and I know I keep saying this)are superb and with your writing it just makes me feel like I'm walking along side you. When I find I'm heading east, you and I will have to make plans to meet at Eataly. *Warning: I may never leave the bread department!

    Feel free to visit often and take us along. We're not apt to get bored with such a fascinating variety.

  43. Incredible. I can't even imagine visiting such a place offering so much. (I'd not enjoy eating there because the atmosphere isn't what I'm used to...window views...but I'm sure that I could enjoy the food. I'll just eat at home with you and Vinny! :D )

  44. I am absolutely and utterly blown away, Pat! What a fabulous place! I can't even imagine!

    I have missed you SO much. Have finally got Mr. Magpie better, but then I have had server issues. So I read. I have been reading a book about George Washington, and I have thought of you a LOT because it talks about the battles in NYC. I highly recommend this new volume on his life. It is amazing.

    Sending you hugs across the miles. I keep hoping that one day, we'll get to meet in person. I would LOVE that!

    What a wonderful post. I feel like I live under a rock. That bread,
    and pappardelle is my favorite pasta, looks so good. you would have to put chains on me in that place. I am going to NY for 3 days in Dec, for my Cousin's Daughter Dina's wedding in the Hamptons. A big Italian wedding, wish we could meet. I will get picked up at Laguardia and go to Bayside then Center Morches for other cousin. Got to figure out how we can meet for coffee. yvonne- Ps I love the Ghost and mrs Muir too.

  65. We just came back from spending almost a week in Manhattan but we did not know about EATALY. We walked close to it without knowing it was there. But we had such a great time in NYC that my husband said we should not wait two years to go back, so I am taking note for the next time. This place is amazing – you show it so well.

  72. I am sure I would have been wanting to eat from one section to the other. Since my job loss, having to practice restraint in places like this is the most awful thing!!! I never had any self control whatsoever but, in the past twenty months, I've learned to develop it, much to my regret!! Your pasta looked fabulous and now, at 2AM, I am ravenous!

  77. What a lovely trip you had! I have never been to NYC and I'm tempted to go buy a ticket right now, if for nothing else than to go live in this store! YUM - the pasta aisle, the bread aisle, the fresh mozz, the fish, the veggies... that's my vision of paradise (minus the beach, of course).
