2010 New York City Marathon

The 2010 New York City ING Marathon was held on Sunday, November 7.  The mosaic above was made with photos I took last year as I stood on 4th Avenue and 26th Street in Brooklyn, New York.  It was so chilly at race time this year that my feet got cold and I didn't take my gloves off to take photos, I just cheered on as many runners as I could before giving up and going back home. Sometimes it takes a lot of endurance just to be a marathon observer!

There were over 45,000 runners in the competition this year, and I had hoped to see the Chilean miner Edison Pena, but unfortunately he didn't pass by while I was watching.  Pena was among 33 miners in Chili who were rescued last month after a cave-in trapped them nearly a half-mile underground for 69 days.  He spent hours running in the mine to keep his spirits up and to inspire the other miners to stay strong.

Pena crossed the Central Park finish line at 3:24 p.m., with a time of 5 hours, 40 minutes, 51 seconds. He had knee pain, and had to walk much of the course, but he ultimately finished and met his goal of completing the 26.219 mile marathon course through the city's five boroughs in six hours.

This year's winners in all the different marathon divisions can be seen at this link.
Last year over $25 million was raised by the NYC Marathon for charity and that number is expected to be broken in the final tally after this year's race.

I'm adding this post to Mary of The Little Red House Mosaic Monday event. Thanks Mary!

  17. I'm chuckling at "it takes a lot of endurance just to be a marathon observer!" It was 50 degrees here today and that was cold for my Southern blood! If it's too cold for you, there's no hope for me to endure watching from the street :-)

  18. Dana this year's oldest male marathon runner was 90! The oldest woman was in her 80's. God bless them!

Mary, I'm glad you recognized my humor :)

  23. I am so glad you featured the NYC Marathon and especially your shot of Pena. He is some gutsy man and one so full of fun and personality. He is a real inspiration to all of us. The entire mosaic is so colorful and interesting. My husband ran in a half marathon years ago, but all he does is walk quickly!!! LOL. GREAT POST. genie

  32. Wow, that's exciting! I've watched the Los Angeles Marathon, and one year my husband rode his bike on the course while I walked the 5K part with a friend. Fun times!

  33. What an inspiring story! I didn't know one of the Chilean Miners was running the marathon. How awesome is that?

  35. Yay!! I love city Marathons!! I love the London one - I never ever want to participate but this year I got caught up in it on my way to work and the atmosphere was just so jolly and so nice and so happy!! But best was all those who came in costume raising funds for charities!!

So yay for marathons and brilliant to see Mr Pena join in!! You know you get very few global feelgood stories - very few!! And the rescue of the 33 miners in Chile was one of the most memorable!!! So good for Mr Pena!!!

Phew - I feel exhausted just looking at this amazing pics!! Take care

  36. Hi Pat,
Thank you for commenting on my blog. When I was in NYC, I remember that I've had hard time coming back home because the streets are closed for the Marathon! Then what I did was to watch and cheer runners up. Just like you did.
    Great shots.

  37. I would say it would be warmer running than watching. It must be rewarding for those who do compete.

  38. The daughter of my MIL's neighbour was there, she's running the marathon for 5 years now (and in the meantime she gave birth to an adorable little girl). She and her husband are real fit and always running around....

  39. Great photos Pat. What a great crowd. We had a step-niece-in-law (if there is such a word) competing. I wish we could have been there.

So many inspiring stories came out of that Chilean mine. Good for Pena for again showing his perseverance through difficult conditions.

  43. Hi Pat. Your pictures bring back memories. We were there 13 years ago as one of our sons ran the New York Marathon. I remember that day like it was yesterday as it rained all day . We walked for hours to see our son and his fiends run by and it was such a wonderful experience.
    Thanks for the memories.

  46. Pat. .it seems so surreal that you live right there. .how absolutely exciting. We watched the miner cross the finish line from the comfort of our couch. He is certainly a testament to overcoming a difficult situation and not only surviving but doing it singing his favorite songs.

  47. I love Pena running - what is more wonderful than that? I remember cheering in Central Park during the late 70's and early 80's and being a member of the New York Runner Club. Great memories. Great race and you captured it.

  52. Hi Pat, Sunday I was thinking about how difficult it would be to run in such cold weather because it is harder to breathe! I suppose it would be worse if the temp was in the 80's or 90's! I just visited your last pink post too. Your daughter was beautiful in that dress! I think pink is great, and it is a good color on me! Have a great day. Linda

  53. WOW... look at all those runners! Their strength and determination is much to be admired. So is Pena's story... Wow... It's been very cold here too, they're calling for sleety mix tomorrow...*sigh*... it's that time of year... LOL! Happy Week, Pat ((HUGS))

  58. It is always so exciting to see these marathons and this year's was very special. I am sure Pena's participation brought tears to the eyes of many.

I think I'd have to watch, though, from a perch indoors somewhere if my tootsies were freezing ( wimp, I am ).
