Chihuly Glass at the Borgata

As a tease, I showed the photos above in my Saturday post asking if anyone could guess what they were. Quite a few commenters knew they were works by the glass artist Dale ChihulyDale Chihuly is one of the foremost glass artists, with works in over 200 museum collections worldwide. Chihuly is primarily known for moving blown glass into the realm of large-scale contemporary art glass sculptures.

(All photos will enlarge if clicked on once and then again when they open on a new page.)

The examples I showed are located in the Borgata Hotel and Casino located at 1 Borgata Way, Atlantic City, New Jersey. This forty-story hotel which opened in 2003 contains l2,000 guest rooms and suites. It hosts an assortment of fine dining restaurants, including the Old Homestead Steakhouse, Bobby Flay Steak, SeaBlue, Wolfgang Puck American Grille, Izakaya, and Fornelletto. It also contains a European-style, 54,000-square-foot Spa Toccare, two entertainment theaters that host headline act, 11 specialty boutiques, and a 161,000-square-foot casino floor incorporating 4,100 slot machines and 200 table games.

This beautiful chandelier is located in the "living room" for hotel guests.

A close-up of all the beautiful ornaments adorning the rings of the fixture.

The second picture was an extreme close-up of the Chihuly chandelier in the hotel's main entrance lobby.

It is a profusion of beautiful blown glass curlicues!

Glass columns grace both sides of the casino entrance.

A close-up of a portion of one of the glass columns.

Many other beautiful Chihuly chandeliers line the corridors of the hotel.

A photo mosaic of many more glass sculptures that are located throughout the Borgata Hotel.

This walkway planter feature also contained beautiful examples of Chihuly glass.

A photo mosaic of close-ups of the art glass flowers and plants

I really enjoyed looking at all the beautiful Chihuly glass in the Borgata, and I hope you did too!

  15. In a word WOW...that was simply incredible. I watched glass blowers in Corning, NY but what they were doing was pretty standard stuff compared to Chihuly!
I love color and this is color and then some...in glass, lots and lots of glass! Thanks for the fabulous fotos...and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

    He's popular--and rightfully so!

  19. I love the big curlicue chandelier. It's super impressive. I can't imagine the hours it took to blow each part of the whole piece.

  20. What a joy to the eyes! Amazing! My favorite is probably the one with the yellow curlicue chandeliers in the yellow rectangles, because it tricks the eye. To me it looks like endless reflections, but I think it is really many chandiliers in a row.

  24. I fell in love with glass works after I visisted some artisans' workshops in Venice a long ago. Some of my friends argue that glass is cold, instead I find it very warm and sensual, sure you have to be an artist to make such beautiful forms out of some chemical elements....

  25. You are so lucky getting to see Chihuly's exhibits. I have followed this guy for some time but never seen his creations for real. I am passionate about glass art and it's very good to see others are too ♥

  26. They're chandeliers!! Wow!!! How amazing!! They're really stunning and very eye catching!! I can only imagine how they look like all lit up - fantastic! It's great that this hotel is showcasing Mr Chihuly's work! He's most prolific! I've just visited his websites and he's got permanent and temporary exhibits everywhere!! Wow!!! I love how his installations blend into the walkway planter so organically with the plants!

Thanks for showcasing such an amazing unique talent!!

    Take care

  42. Thank you for your comments, everyone!

Susan, I read that fact about Chihuly! Very cool!

Ann, the hotel has windows -- it may look like it doesn't but every room has a window. I don't think they open, however. It is air onditioned in summer.

  51. Quite spectacular and representative of Dale's style. We love claiming him as a home town boy. There's an exhibit of Chihuly Glass in one of the galleries at the Tacoma Art Museum right now and if I remember right, there's a larger exhibition coming soon. (And a Norman Rockwell show coming too).

  53. First time I've heard of Chihuly. You've done a a marvelous job presenting him and his works of art glass so well.
I went over to his web site, which was also quite interesting, but I think you led me closer and more "under his skin" with your report.
    Chihuly, what a great meeting!

  56. Chihuly glass is so colorful and spectacular. I've seen it here in San Francisco but can't remember where. I always worry about earthquakes with something this lovely - can't believe my crystal has survived all the tremors but not a single glass has broken.
