Some more of my photos from the show..
In close proximity to the New York Botanical Gardens is Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, which is a wonderful area full of many old-world Italian shops and restaurants. I did a few posts showing some of the delicious ethnic Italian specialties you can find there on which you can read on this link and this link. We stopped to make another visit after going to the gardens but because it was a Sunday not many establishments were open except for bread and pastry stores and restaurants.
We decided to go into this pastry shop in the area with the pink awning for a special reason.
Cafe Egidio located at E. 187th Street between Arthur Avenue and Hughes Avenue, in the Bronx, and established almost a hundred years ago, is well known for its authentic cookies and pastries. We wanted to buy special St. Joseph's pastries for the St. Joseph's Feast Day which has just passed on March 19, but the sign in the lower portion of the window for "Sanguinaccio" really caught my husband's eye with delight!
Here it is!
I will leave it up to your imagination as to what sanguinaccio is, as it is not something everyone would find appetizing unless you grew up eating it. My husband's mother used to make this special sweet treat once a year, and he declared that Egidio's sanguinaccio was as good as his Mom's! A wonderful compliment to them.
We did purchase a couple of the special St. Joseph's pastries to take home to enjoy later. On the left are Zeppole di San Giuseppe, which are fried dough, layered with a vanilla egg custard, then topped with a candied cherry on top, and on the right are Sfingi di San Giuseppe, which are reminiscent of a cream puff, and are filled with cannoli cream, chocolate chips and topped with a candied orange peel. I think it would be safe to say almost everyone would enjoy eating them...they are so good!
Pink orchids and pastries ...who could ask for a better treat to welcome Spring?
Thanks, Beverly for another wonderful Pink Saturday weekend!
Great welcome to Spring! Love sfingi! Never had the dessert your husband loves, but it looks so good and so dark chocolately, I'd try it. Looks like gelato or pudding?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous orchids! Enjoy the weekend, Pat!
Pat, Those orchids take my breath away. I so wish I had a green thumb and could grow them.
ReplyDeleteAnd, there you go tempting me with those wonderful looking desserts!
Oh my, Pat! You've chosen two things close to my heart: flowers and Italian bakeries. When I was a child, my Grandpop would take us to an Italian Bakery in South Philadelphia every weekend. I can still taste the Italian rum cake and cannolis. Your photography is awesome! I'm looking forward to a Spring visit to Longwood Gardens next month with my new camera. Thanks so much for sharing this absolutely perfect day with us. Terri
ReplyDeleteJust when I thought your post could get no better than those beautiful flowers, the pastries showed up! Yummy!
ReplyDeleteEye yummys and tummy yummys...the perfect post. I just bought me a little grocery store orchid, it is so dramatically beautiful! Enjoyed the orchids and the eats!
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite post! I have plans to visit this place...
Love these photos!
~ Gabriela ~
Happy PS Pat
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking is an understatement.
I've never been to the Bronx, but would love to go one day. We always gravitate to Manhattan when there is so much more to N.Y. than "it".
I know all about St. Joseph's day. My birthday is the 19th of March and just about had the name Josephine tagged on to me... whew, glad my mom intervened.
Looks like a type of rich pudding'. In French we called it "pain chaumage". Unemployment cake, lol
Gotta run
Love Claudie from Canada

The flowers are spectacular Pat! Won't even inquire about the dessert I can't pronounce:@)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful PINK orchids and pastries, for Pink Saturday, Pat.... LOVE LOVE LOVE those orchids.... I am going to post another orchid blog (from Biltmore) --but I put it off until about 2 weeks from now...
ReplyDeleteTell me more about Sanguinaccio. It looks chocolaty---but the name kinda surprises me, since I associate it with BLOOD.. Yipes!!!!! SO--tell me what is in that beauty!
Have a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy

ReplyDeleteAll that beauty in one post. Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteLove this post. St. Joe's, Italian bakeries, orchids and sanguinaccio (both the chocolate/cinnamon pudding and the blood pudding mix). A lenten tradition, I didn't know it contained pig's blood as a child. Have a fab weekend. Sea Witch
ReplyDeletePat, these are simply gorgeous! Thanks for sharing more of your trip. ~ Sarah
ReplyDeletePat, I think I gained five pounds just looking at those pastries! Mmmmmm!
ReplyDeleteEEEEEEWWWW. I just googled "sanguinaccio". Ya must have to have an acquired taste! ;)
ReplyDeleteHowever, the other goodies looked delish!!!! Our church just had their St. Joseph's table the 13th. We didn't go to it this year...I was in a sale. However, it's usually wonderful...and I always load up on wonderful Italian cookies.
OMG... the orchids you photographed are so beautiful! I hope you frame some of those prints!
How's baby "M"? I'm sure little "L" is loving being the big brother!
Have a great Pink Saturday!! L, Dana
What is sanguinaccio??? I can't figure it ut and I'm dying to know! All the pastries look so good!! I would tell you which of the pastries are my favorites, but I can't remember how to spell thier names! Ha ha!! What a great day you must have had, I would have been in heaven!! Love your orchids.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a fun filled life! Pink orchids and pastries. I hope someday to meet you when you are visiting your family in Colorado. Hugs and Happy Pink Saturday.
ReplyDeleteThe photos of the orchids are simply gorgeous. And I enjoyed a peek at the pastries. Nothing like a real bakery. We don't have them in our area. Or real delis. Nothing like NY!
ReplyDeleteSweets and orchids...what a great combo!
ReplyDeleteI would love one of each dessert please. Now I am off to google the dessert your husband bought. Fun post as usual.
ReplyDeleteIt is cold and rainy here so I really liked your Spring flowers posted this week on Pink Saturday.
ReplyDeleteHPS!
Joyce M
So beautiful and yummy too. Happy Pink Saturday, Char
ReplyDelete5,000 orchids. What a treat for your eyes. The pink ones are super. Now the second part of your post is making my mouth water and I'm trying to lose weight and not eat sweets. Yum, yum, yum.
ReplyDeleteI want to dive into those orchids!
ReplyDeleteI knew as soon as I saw the name that this must have something to do with what we call Boudin Noir.....but this is sweet. Very interesting!
Lovely pinks!! St. Joseph's Day is a big thing in our area because of the Italian and Polish immigrants that settled here. Both were very big on celebrating St. Joseph's Day and my FIL , who was born on 3/18 was named Joseph because of his birthday being the day before the Feast Day. But a year later, another baby boy was born on the 19th and my Hubby's uncle had to be named john because there was already a Joseph!!
ReplyDeleteHPS!!
Hugs,
Debbie
happy pink Saturday... I have an orchid of sorts on my post...not nearly as beautiful as the ones in your photos !
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photography, Pat! Loved all the bokeh moments.
ReplyDeleteLove the orchids, Pat!! They are so beautiful. They are on my list to attempt to paint, when I get time!! Blessings ~ Tanna
ReplyDeleteSanguinaccio....blood pudding! My grandmother made it but I was never daring enough for it! A real old timey Italian Easter tradition. xo,
ReplyDeleteSanguinaccio! I went ahead and googled it and squealed!! Blood pudding mixed with chocolate!! Will wonders never cease to amaze me?!?! LOL!!!!!! But the pastries!!! Yum!
ReplyDeleteAwww the orchids are just lovely - your pictures are stunning - I can see every detail of the orchids - just simply gorgeous!!!
Happy St Joseph's Feast Day!!!
Take care
x
Such beautiful orchids, also belated congratulations on the safe arrival of your grandson.
ReplyDeleteThose orchids are so lovely. I remember the days when I was going to formal dances and I loved the orchid corsages more than the roses and carnations... It must be hard to stay slim with so many wonderful bakeries in New York to tempt you. I always felt I'd like to work in a bakery since everyone walks in with great anticipation and away with a smile on their face!
ReplyDeleteHi Pat, I am happy to see more of the New York Botanical Garden. The orchids are so beautiful in pink. Your photos are stunning as always.
ReplyDeleteThe pastries are yummy and if I ever get to NY again I want to go there. HA! What is in the treat your hubs loves. Curious me!
I am still thrilled that baby L was born on my dad's birthday. When will you be able to visit your new baby love? Not too long I hope.
Hugs, Jeanne
The orchids are gorgeous! I bet the smell was devine! Now I am hungry and want some pastries, ha!
ReplyDeleteHugs and HPS,
Jacalyn
Wow yummy and gorgeous blooms! love them.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing Pat.
Happy Pink!
Beautiful flowers! I need to get myself to New York and see them in person.:) I am following your blog!! :)
ReplyDeleteLove those beautiful orchids!
ReplyDeleteI think the root word of that dessert gave it away for me. I don't think I'll be looking up the recipe ;)
I googled sanguinaccio. I'll pass. But the flower photos are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI was so inspired by your 1st orchid post that I went out and bought one, it's now sitting in my family room!
ReplyDeleteHi Pat! I was born in Madeire, an island full of orchids; and love them...
ReplyDeleteBlogtrotter Two is leaving the Côte d’Azur 2010; but it has a beautiful spot for you... Enjoy and have a wonderful Sunday and week ahead!!
oh st. josephs zeppoles!!! I bought a ton a couple weeks ago at Carlos in Hoboken (the cake boss guy)...i got them with the Cannoli filling they were SOOOO GOOOOD..i wish i had some right now!...pretty pics..cant wait till spring really has sprung!
ReplyDeleteIt does my heart good to look at a place that is not covered in white. All those pink blooms must harbor spring. I have been looking at a recipe for sanguinaccio all winter - but it is all chocolate - my reward when I feel like claiming it. I hear tell the Twin Cities will finally be getting an Italian pastry shop. Love the cafe - my grandfather was Egidio.
ReplyDeletePat I miss your blog because I have been so busy! I love the flowers in this post!
ReplyDeleteUmmm...pigs blood pudding...golly, gee, ummm.... no thanks! ha!
ReplyDeleteI will however be happy to share the other pastries while I admire the lovely pink orchids in your mosaic.
Wonderful I love orchids! I am longing for the spring now. We still have alot of snow.
ReplyDeleteWhat a feast for my eyes Pat! Such beautiful colours!
ReplyDeleteThe food looks great too. I am guessing a truffle mousse. :-)
The orchid photos are really a treat. So colorful and pretty.
ReplyDeleteAs to the sanguinaccio, I had to quench my curiosity so I looked it up. I have to say...interesting combination of ingredients.
I don't know what was more beautiful the flora or the pastry! I must be hungry...lovely pink post Pat.
ReplyDelete♥, Susan
oh my ... it looks like such a fun and beautiful day. I love orchids ... it looks like it was a spectacular show!
ReplyDeleteI signed up for a food tour of Arthur Avenue and just need to schedule it. It's one of my favorite places and I am long overdue for a visit. Madonia's Bakery is an all-time favorite.
ReplyDeleteHappy very belated Pink Saturday, Pat. I am still out trying to visit some.
ReplyDeleteWow, The orchids are absolutely magnificent. I have always loved orchids. Have you ever seen the orchid trees that grown in south Florida?
And, who could resist one of those pretty and I am sure tasty goodies?
