A series of sculptures called "The Roses" can be seen along the traffic malls on Park Avenue in Manhattan, between 57th and 67th streets from January 25th through May 31st, 2011.
The Paul Kasmin Gallery, in conjunction with New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Fund for the Park Avenue Sculpture Committee, is funding the display of Will Ryman’s 38 sculptures of rose blossoms towering as high as 25 feet, complimented by 20 individual scattered rose petals,
I took these photos during the last week in February, right before I went on my trip to Sydney, Australia, (which you can read about on this link) so the pretty roses have a sugarcoating of fresh snow that fell that morning.
The gallery web site states:
"The Roses will present viewers with a sculptural tribute
to the larger than life qualities of New York City."
"Colossal blossoms ranging from five to ten feet in diameter at the bud will spring up from steel stems in eight clusters of four to six rose buds each. Drawing inspiration from nature’s cycles and seasons, each cluster is complete with an inhabiting brass ladybug, aphid, beetle or bee for an element of both reality and humor in reference to the viewers’ own bug’s-eye-view of The Roses’ gigantic blossoms."
Here are more of the roses in front of Christ Church United Methodist,
located at Park Avenue & 60th Street in Manhattan.
The large colorful pink roses certainly helped to brighten the winter landscape!
A close up of the sculptures brass beetle and ladybug on a few of the roses.
The New York City Parks and Recreation web site states that "the exhibition is meant to be fun and playful." Seeing this beautiful sculptural rose display certainly put a smile on my face, and I hope it will do the same for you!
PS: I'm still waiting for our second grandson's birth! My daughter-in-law and son feel that this weekend's "Super Perigee Moon" might encourage that to happen. You can see more about this event on this video:
Make sure to look up at the beautiful perigee moon this weekend!

ReplyDeleteHi Pat
ReplyDeleteFirst I hope your grandbaby is born tomorrow since it's a special day : )
Never heard of that moon. That was interesting and again it happens on a very special day, lol.
I've been to your blog before, I'm from BUBBLIN' OVER, but changed last month. I was with you in spirit when you took us to that indoor Italian market that was crazy busy. Forget the name now.
I'm not a cook, but my hubby has happily taken over in the kitchen. It's all his now. He's also blogging about it OMG.
Happy PS and there really is no place like N.Y. anytime of the year. The art of Roses is something else. Very cool.
We go to N.Y. a couple times a year.
I see you met Diane last St. Patty's day. cool.
Ok time to move on.
Love Claudie
xoxoxo
Oh! I had to stop and enjoy each picture. What beautiful sculptures & your photos were perfect. Thank you for the beautiful post. Happy PS!
ReplyDeleteLicks & Wags, Niki
Those rose sculptures are gorgeous...especially with the frosting of snow!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you had great temps in Brooklyn today! Ours were as warm as yesterday, but they were still keepers! We took our grand girl bowling for the first time!! She's a natural at Bumper Bowling...she beat her grandpa! Ha! It was awesome!
I was hoping I'd read that that your little #2 Grand Boy had arrived. Maybe his mom and dad are right...perhaps the Perigee Moon will be his entrance cue!
Have a happy Pink Saturday! L, Dana
These roses are phenomonal!!!! How long will they be there? I hate it when there are beautiful artistic dispalys like this, and then they take them down!! And I love the ladybug!! Thanks so much for the info about the moon, I will be ready!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these beautiful roses on Park Ave. I will never get to see them in person, but truly enjoyed them through your lens.

Hi Pat! For many years 56th & Park was my address when in New York: The Drake Swissotel... Saw many exhibitions in Park, but never Roses... ;)
ReplyDeleteThe Supermoon video is amazing!!
OK; I know that contemporary art doesn’t take unanimous approval... But some pieces are worth seeing. Check it at Blogtrotter Two, enjoy and have a superb weekend!!
So very lovely! I especially like the picture of the roses with snow on the petals. Love this post! Lucky you to be able to "walk among the roses." have a grand day! Cathy

You have the most unique blog ever! I love those flowers. What a treat to see them in person! Have a terrific weekend and Pink Saturday too! Hugs Anne
ReplyDeleteLove your pinks. Happy Pink Saturday!
ReplyDeleteThe roses provide a nice contrast to the gray buildings. I imagine they would make most people smile. You commented on the perfect condition of my coverlet. It's not in perfect shape. There are some holes here and there but it's still a real treasure since it's at least 150 years old and is handwoven. Thanks for your comments Pat!
ReplyDeleteHi Pat
ReplyDeleteAnother grandboy on the way! How nice for your family--i am going to have to make the Guiness stew, looks great!
The moon is fabulous here this week - I got up to turn off the porch lights and realized that it was moonlight.
ReplyDeleteI love the roses in the snow on Park Avenue!
I saw them on the Sunday news!! They had the artist on as well, annd he thought the big blossoms with the snow was a fabulous reminder that spring will come!! How awesome that you live right there!! I am 2 hours away, and we go to the city when we can, but not as often as we used to, kids have so many plans and sports, and the hubby works too much, ugh.
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing them to me again!!
HPS!
xxDaniella
A lovely post, Pat. As usual. :) Those rose sculptures are something else. I love when this kind of public space art goes on. All towns and cities should have this sort of thing. (I'm dreaming, I know.)
ReplyDeleteI love the roses! They add such a splash of colour to the city landscape.
ReplyDeleteThe moon is huge here tonight (Saturday). It is definitely worth seeing.
Hi Pat! Oh, these are spectacular! My daughter and her family have just moved to upstate New York and I can't wait to take them to the City when their little one gets a bit older! I love New York! ;)
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia;)
I still haven't gotten to see these roses so I'm glad you sent along these lovely photos. I'll sure be watching the moon tonight.

ReplyDeletethings are always bigger in NYC. What fun these lovely roses are, especially since they are snow kissed. Hope the perigee moon pulls in that new grandson too. Sea witch
ReplyDeleteLove the huge roses with snow on them! "Larger than life" concept of the roses to show NYC off is perfect. I lived 150 miles from NYC for almost half my life, loved taking the bus to the city and walking everywhere. Have not been in years and years. Seeing these delightful roses sure made me miss NYC. Happy PS.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing these lovely sculptures. I hope I get to Manhattan before they're gone.
ReplyDeleteI think I shall send this to our city officials. I think they'd finally get unanimous agreement that these are WONDERFUL!
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday, Pat. Any baby news yet?
