The Denver Botanic Garden in Autumn

Take a walk with me along a path under an arbor dripping with autumn colors in the Denver Botanic Garden.  I was here in late October to visit the spectacular Chihuly Glass Exhibit that is closing at the end of November--click here to read that blog post-- but now I'd like to show you the other beautiful ways the garden looked on my visit.

(All photos in this post will enlarge for easier viewing if clicked on)

There are 42 different individual gardens within the garden devoted to special themes, with groupings of over 700 native Colorado plants, flowers, shrubs, and trees that fit that theme.

Every path leads to new views of these mini gardens within the Denver Botanical Garden in every season, but the reds, golds, and oranges of autumn gave them all a special glow.

There are botanical delights to see everywhere...

...including the sighting of a female Downy Woodpecker in a tree!

Fall is certainly a beautiful time to visit the garden.....

...as there are also many flowers still in bloom!

Here is a small selection of flowers I photographed on my visit.

We also visited the Boettcher Memorial Tropical Conservatory within the Denver Botanical Garden, where cacti and succulents were displayed outside, while inside...

....the climate and moisture were equal to a day in a tropical rainforest,

There were a few Chihuly glass displays in the conservatory, but the real stars here were...

.
....the phenomenal lush and exotic tropical trees and plants that lined the paths and draped over the walkways from vines.

The orchids and bromeliads that are in bloom this time of the year were delicate treasures for the eye to behold!

The Denver Botanic Garden is located at 1007 York Street, in Denver, Colorado, just 10 minutes from the downtown area.

If you are a reader in the US, you probably know from weather reports this week that our area in Colorado welcomed its first "Arctic Blast"!  We had a couple inches of snow and a few days of record-breaking cold temperatures. Even the community horses had to wear coats! I was thankful for a warm home, and the precious sight of watching my little granddaughter sit and watch the snowfall. She is saying many words now, and it was fun to see and hear her reaction to the snow.

 Thanks for visiting!

  5. I love visiting botanic gardens Pat, and with the Chihuly glass it would be even more enticing to visit. So sorry you're getting blasted with winter so early this year. No snow yet, but it seems to be moving here to NJ too.

  6. Just delightful. Thanks for sharing.

I am not ready for the "artic blast" but I have no control over it. Our temps are at the freezing mark at night too. Daytime warms considerably. It is time for the new season.

    Lovely photos. I enjoyed them.

  7. Oh yes...not only do I need to go back to Colorado in the fall for the mountain views! But the Botanical Gardens is amazing in the Autumn as well! We never made it there, even when we lived there those six months after our daughter was born, or when we got back to visit when she was 6. So, a visit is in order. Great photos! Glad you got to see the woodpecker also. Really amazing flowers and plant display and I love the fall color!

  9. I am a fan of Chihuly and I know he's been featured here in the Phoenix Botanical Gardens but I liked your comment about the real stars of the garden. . .somehow his works always seem to pale in comparison to the stunning plants in these gardens. A fun tour!

  10. One of the nicest botanical gardens I've seen and I'm going to read the article on the glass art in the snow. I'd love to have a few pieces in my garden for winter interest.

  24. So you have me missing autumn and it's not winter yet. The photos are so lovely - do adore visiting gardens. We try to do so on all road trips. We had flowers until the first early snowfall also. The next time we are in Denver, we shall have to check out the gardens.

  25. Hi Pat, I read about your arctic blast and snow... We had it too---and even woke up to some snow and a temp of 12 degrees this morning. Gads---to think we have had two snows already and it's only Nov. 18... Crazy...

Beautiful Fall photos from the Botanic Gardens... I love Fall and am sad to see it end. I posted one of two blog posts yesterday showing some pretty Fall Colors in North Carolina...

Stay warm and keep enjoying that granddaughter.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  26. I forgot to say that I think that woodpecker is a HAIRY Woodpecker. They are much larger than the little Downy's.

  33. I visited Colorado four years ago and it was lovely. We visited Leadville (the altitude killed me), Eagle, and Aspen, but the closest we got to downtown Denver was the airport. Colorado was beautiful, and so are your photos!

  34. I had no idea that Denver had such botanical treasures. I will be sure to add that to my list of places I'd love to visit. I did a book about the Volunteer Park Conservatory in Seattle, I loved it so much, so I'd love to see another version. Thanks for your lovely tour. I particularly like the intro (path) image. Thanks!

  38. To see all that color especially now that the cold weather is here is a real real and some for those tropicals remind me of the plants we see on vacation. The best flower was, of course, your granddaughter!!...:)JP

  39. Hi Pat, I love visiting the garden in all seasons. I was there on Tuesday - an overcast day perfect for viewing the Chihuly Exhibit. There was even little snow still on the ground. Here in the mountains, we're awaiting another winter storm. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Pat.
