Happy 4th of July!

The spectacular Macy's July 4th fireworks display in New York City is moving across town today. To celebrate the 400th Anniversary of explorer Henry Hudson’s voyage of discovery aboard the Dutch vessel, The Half Moon,” Macy’s will stage the nation’s largest 4th of July fireworks display over the Hudson River instead of the East River this year.

Information from the Macy's website:

"American River," the theme of the 33rd annual Macy’s Fireworks will give
more than two million spectators and millions of viewers nationwide America’s
most spectacular showcase of brilliant colors, jawdropping effects and
thunderous sound. The patriotic revelry will feature approximately 40,000 shells
exploding in a kaleidoscope of color at a rate of more than 1,500 per minute.
The 26-minute display, designed in collaboration with SOUSA Fireworks, will be
set off from six barges positioned between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson
River giving New York City residents a stunning front row seat to America’s
biggest Independence Day party. "

Since we will not be able to view the fireworks display from Brooklyn or lower Manhattan this year, my husband and I decided to stay home and have our own celebration. I made our favorite blueberry tart yesterday and I added some fresh raspberries from the raspberry bush I have growing in a large pot in my backyard. Served with a little vanilla ice cream on top we will have an edible version of "red white and blue" for dessert.

I hope everyone who celebrates today has an enjoyable and safe celebration of the 233 year of our Nation's Independence!

"America! America! God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood

From sea to shining sea! "

  1. Pat, my goodness, that tart is a blueberry fantasy dessert. I wonder if I could make something like it...I never quite get the crust right. I know used chilled water...work the butter in until crumbly...what can I say. Pies- and tarts by default-require a special touch. I love the photos today...and enjoy the fireworks! <3

  2. Pat - That tart looks scrumptious. And the photos are terrific. I remember watching those Macy's fireworks several years from my office window on Front St. There's nothing like them anywhere! Happy Fourth.

  3. Happy 4th of July! Remembering all those fourths in NYC. It's a grand day all over America - and i do want that tart. Blueberries are in season, plump and ready to be an ingredient. If I can stop eating them by the handfuls!

  4. Met a man yesterday at our local hospital who has a son marching in the Macy's day parade. This man lives in New York and was here visiting and a horse stepped on his foot and broke it. He was at the hospital getting a cast and trying to get back to New York in time for the parade. Happy Holiday to you and yours.

  5. Lady Liberty never looked any more beautiful than in that wonderful photo. (I've just come from Sherry's blog where she's talking about her visit to NYC so I'm feeling especially ready for your post.)

That is one lovely blueberry tart and so perfectly festive for the day.

Thank you for all you do... Your comments about the fireworks display makes me so wish that I had a working television. Wonder if I can round it up on my computer. It'll be amazing, I'm sure.

  8. Hi Pat, Happy 4th,
Loved the A Tree Grows in Brooklyn blog. I dusted off my copy and plan to re-read it! Also, I noticed the Ailanthus Altissima growing along the trail that I walk each morning.

We spent yesterday in another great "funky" place...Northamptom, Mass. It's always fun to spend the day there!

  9. Pat, Sorry to hear about the fireworks moving out on you... but your pie more than makes up for it! We're going to have our own display this year. We have firework stands and tents on just about every other corner of our city. So enticing for a 15 year old. Needless to say, I caved in. Happy 4th! ~ Robyn

  15. Oh that fireworks display over the Hudson was absolutely fantastic. Did you watch on tv? It was so much better than the fireworks in Washington, D.C. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would've forgotten completely about Macy's. Thanks.

  23. Pat, I tyhink that tart is more spectacular than the fireworks over the Hudson this year! Because they were over the Hudson, and I'm currently stuck in Jersey, we had a great view on the cliffs :)

Also, how 'bout them Yanks? Let's go for the sweep tomorrow, although the pitcher we're facing is tough!
