Home of the "7 Pound Breakfast Burrito"

Yes, you heard that right -- a seven pound burrito!  Where is this behemoth burrito served, or more importantly, why is it even made? To find out those answers I'll show you one of my favorite places to eat Mexican food when I visit my children in Denver, Colorado:

It is Jack-N-Grill, at their flagship restaurant located at 2524 N. Federal Blvd in Denver -- seven blocks north of Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium on the east side of Federal Blvd. Here you can taste owner Jack Martinez's delicious New Mexican style Mexican cuisine, flavored with his fire roasted spicy green Socorro chilies.

The Jack-N-Grill has won many awards, as you can see by their wall of proclamations.  They are especially proud of being voted #13 in a poll conducted by The Travel Channel as "Americas 101 Tastiest Places to Chow Down Countdown."

Their menu is full of a selection of moderately priced entrees.

My family and I enjoy their assortment of combination or sampler plates.

We also like their selection of giant burgers. The Food Network Magazine included a Jack-N- Grill burger called "The Jaurez - South of the Border Monster Burger" in their best burgers issue of "50 States 50 Burgers."

My son loves their New Mexican Posole -- it is cooked with no meat, but green or red chili and a choice of shredded beef, chicken or pork, can be added.

But the star attraction is their giant 7 pound Breakfast Burrito, introduced as a "Can you eat it all?" challenge in 2003.  It is full of 6 pounds of grilled potatoes, 12 scrambled eggs,  1/2 pound of ham, 1/2 pound of cheese, onions and chilies--all wrapped in burrito shells and smothered with chili sauce and cheese. You can watch a video of it being made on this Youtube video.

A whole family, or group of friends, can order one 7 pound breakfast burrito to share.  If you take the challenge to eat it all by yourself, however, there are two rules: there is no time limit, and you are not allowed a bathroom break.  If a man finishes it, he does not pay, and he gets a photo of his face on their "Wall of Fame."  If a woman finishes it, she does not pay, and she also gets her photo placed on the "Wall of Fame," plus she gets to eat at any Jack-N-Grill for free, for life!   About one in twenty people that take the challenge are successful in eating the whole burrito.

The Travel Channel's "Man vs. Food" TV show host Adam Richman took the challenge and failed!  He ate a little more than a half and then threw in the towel. You can watch a time lapse video of his attempt on The Travel Channel on this link.

So, what do you think?  Could you eat it all?

  2. Looks like a meal for 7 people for sure. I love Mexican food and burritos are way up there but I never could eat a 7 pounder! Now I'm craving some Mexican food...

  3. I can't even look at it right now since I just overstuffed myself with an early dinner. We were trying to strategize by eating early a few hours before our yoga class but misjudged the amount and we had to cancel the class...and now this...ohhhhhh, groan

  27. Oh my gosh, it makes me feel sick to even think of eating the whole thing. I do love good Mexican food though. You are making me want to visit my favorite local restaurant.

I watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and always drool over what's cooking. I'd love to visit a couple of those spots too.

  32. Good morning Pat, i am a happy Blogger this morning because I have time to visit for a change.

I would love to try this burrito but in a size I could eat. The food all looks so delicious. It has been a long time since I was in Colorado but we loved skiing there.

I also loved reading your Mother of the bride dress search. It is a BIG decision. I'm so happy you found the dress you will be happy wearing. I am happy my children's weddings are all done. It is a wonderful but stressful journey. Now comes the grands in a few years. One is already married. Yikes, I am shocked at how time has sped up of late. HA!

Wishing a lovely wedding celebration with your daughter and happy days ahead.
    Hugs, Jeanne

  34. Now this is a post i'll show the farmer later. He loves the "Man Versus Food" show. He's cooking beef stew right now so it's my day off. I love a day without worrying about what I'll cook for supper! It must be fun to eat at a place this famous - but not too often...

  35. Love Mexican food. I don't know if I could eat all that. 10 years ago I could.. It all looks good.

  36. Oh Pat, I cracked up laughing when I saw this post and I said to myself - "Oh no she didn't" . . . then I thought, she won't get into that dress for the wedding!!! LOL!!! Phew, what a relief it was to read how many people it feeds!

This post made me smile and made me hungry! LOL!!!

  37. While I admit to needing to attend Weight Watchers, there's no way I could eat that quantity of potatoes, much less everything else. If I ever get to Denver, I'll be sure to look up Jack and Grill.

  38. Okay, if Adam failed, there's no need for me to try! LOL! Man that burger looks wonderful! blessings ~ tanna

  39. Nope, couldn't do it! My Irish stomach can't take Mexican food, no peppers or anything like that! But I could do a good job on that hamburger, for sure!

There's a place out here that does a 76 oz steak challenge. We were there once when a soldier did it. You had one hour. Iwas afraid he would have a heart attack.

  40. Hello...I am new here and was completely intrigued by the 7 pound breakfast burrito. I have a perverse pleasure in watchin Man vs Food and I definitely think that even my best effort wouldn't help me get through this beast :)

  41. I enjoyed looking at all the mature women hair styles. Your walks in Brooklyn must be so much fun – there is beautiful architecture in Clinton Hills – a joy for a photographer. Your search for a MOB dress must have been so stressful but it looks like the one you decided on is lovely – the color and the fabric. I have to be in a wedding in July, my daughter’s brother in law. All the in-laws of my daughter are from the state of Kerala, India and all the women will wear saris or other Indian clothing. I’d like to wear something like that too. We are going to NYC in May so I hope I can find some Indian clothing stores there. That 7-pound burrito would be a good deal because that would mean burritos for 10 days!

  42. Well, it's quite the conversation piece but it's probably more than a family of four could manage for breakfast! Everything looks delicious there. We love good Mexican food!

  43. No, I could never finish it, but I would love to try. The burrito looks really delicious and cheesy.

  44. OMG...I'm just sitting here, mouth a-gap, and a-gog over this big bad burrito! It's actually pretty mind boggling...LOL! Much as I love Tex-Mex food, not sure I'd have the courage to even order that, as I'd not make it past one bite probably--LOL! This was very fun to see... and wonderful food--YUM! Happy Weekend, Pat ((HUGS))

  45. Holy Cow, I could work on that burrito all week and probably not finish it! The food looks delicious and it sound like a fun place to go for a meal. I would head straight for that combo plate.

  46. I saw the programs you mentioned. We wonder why Americans are so overweight, here lies the story. Too many people think that the bigger the portion the better.

  47. I saw Adam Richman episode at this restaurant! I would LOVE a taste of that burrito but would NOT do it justice and I consider myself a HEARTY eater!

    It ALL looks delicious!

  51. I most definitely could not eat it, but boy does all of the food look good! I would love to eat there.

  52. New Mexican cuisine in Colorado! Amazing... What most people do not realize is that is is NOT Mexican food at all! Of course, northern NM cuisine is totally different than that from the rest of the state. I'm from the Land of Enchantment and we like our chile from Hatch. We don't use enchilada sauce- instead, we make chile. Green and red. No hamburger meat, either! We use steak or shredded roast beef. Texas tends to influence the southeast part of the state so their food down there is totally different.
Whoa, Pat, I'm making myself hungry. LOL I have a stash of red chile in the pantry- guess I need to cook up some chile, make some enchiladas, deep fry some sopaipillas, and just enjoy!

  53. Isn't that crazy? A burrito the size of a newborn. Gah! My husband and I have talked about visiting that place but then forget each time we go to Denver. Need to make a special trip directly there. Yum!
