The north side of the
Williamsburg neighborhood is known for it's young, single, and trendy "hipsters" populating this once industrial area of Brooklyn Only a ten minute ride from Manhattan on the L subway line, it's full of coffee shops, restaurants, art galleries, bars, and vintage markets and boutiques. Mixed in with the modest immigrant housing of the past are new high rise luxury condos and lofts. It's a fun place to walk around, window shop, and enjoy its urban energy.
Which is exactly what a friend and I were doing not long ago when we came upon this half open garage located at 567 Driggs Avenue, off North 6th Street with a view as far as our eyes could see of vintage used goods for sale. The store is appropriately named "JUNK," and is open 9 AM -9 PM, seven days a week.
How could we resist? We had to walk in to browse along its aisles bursting with all kinds of antiques...
...and architectural salvage. I'm glad I had my little pocket Cannon camera with me so I could show you a few of the items we saw.
I was especially fascinated by the very large selection of antique bottles and cans of all kinds and from all eras, complete with their vintage dust and dirt still adhered to them. It is as if they had been unearthed in an archaeology dig, or more likely from a dark basement of a house torn down to make way for a new high rise.
We also saw aisle and aisles of vintage china and bric-a-brac.
Did we buy anything? Not really, as I'm trying to downsize my life right now and not add to my possessions, but it was an interesting place to poke around and explore.

What a great shop! I would love to wander around that area....fun!
ReplyDeleteHow fun. I could (and have) stayed in places like this for hours on end.
ReplyDeleteSam
OH wow!! I can be young hip and trendy! I'll blend in here, no problemo! LOL! OH but it's lovely - I love how this antiques shop/garage looks - it's all over the place and therefore makes hunting around really really fun and intense! I guess the dust adds to their quirky charm! LOL!
ReplyDeleteApps?!?! I have no idea about apps and refuse to learn about them unless I really really really have to! LOL! Plus I don't own a mobile phone! So I don't really know about such things... I know I'll have to eventually but I'm being such a rebel! See? I can so fit in with the hip n happening crowd here! Yay!
Thanks for a most wonderful trip to this awesome place, Pat! Take care
x
If I can ever get a trip in to NY that is not packed with meetings or other agendas, I'm headed to Brooklyn! I've been wanting to take one of the Brooklyn food tours and now your post...a flea market tour too! So exciting!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun afternoon Pat! Gotta chuckle at the shelf of beer cans... kinda looks like a dorm room:@)
ReplyDeleteThe old items looked fun to explore. Did they have good prices or were they "antique" mark ups? I love a good find!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite kind of shopping!
ReplyDeleteAll of this was in that garage? And all so neatly displayed, too. The wheat pattern dishes, we used to have them!!! They gave them away free when you bought gas, way back in the 50's and 60's.
ReplyDeleteThat is the kind of shop I love. Can walk around there, bring some old books there because of downsizing and do go home with other books and sometimes cups and saucers or glasses or..... LOL
ReplyDeleteGood that you had your camera with you Have a good week Pat.
So much better than a mall for shopping. This post got my yard sale juices flowing Pat...you just never know what you might find!
ReplyDelete♥, Susan
I would have loved that place! I enjoy digging for hidden treasure in a place like that.
ReplyDeleteMy poor phone is the cell phone equivalent of a rotary dial phone. I don't even have texting. Needless to say, there are no apps.
What an Aladdin's Cave!
ReplyDeleteFabulous places to prowl around! You are making me salivate for the spring auctions and estate sales!
ReplyDeleteI would have been in heaven! I love to meander around and look at salvage and vintage items.
ReplyDeleteIt's bad enough that you take me globe trotting, but now you are taking me thrifting ... enough I say ... enough!!!!!! (I'm still willing to carry your bags ... traveling or shopping).
ReplyDeleteWhat a great place. I could hours roaming around a place like that. I know what you mean about trying to down size possession.
ReplyDeleteexciting...I'm very selective in my thrift purchases these days...but this is a fantastic place just to look!
ReplyDeleteI love poking around in shops like that, but like you, if anything new comes in the house, something has to go.
ReplyDeleteI've been talking about exploring in Williamsburg with my daughter. Now we'll definitely have to go! It would be great to have you join Seasonal Sundays.
ReplyDelete- The Tablescaper
I never think about what kind of thrift shopping you might have...but WOW! I see lots of neat things that I would love to have! And thanks for the link for the apps. We don't have an Ipad yet...but we're saving for one! ♥
ReplyDeleteOh wow....that looks like a great place. I could have gotten lost in there for hours and there's no way I could have left empty-handed. Even though I'm downsizing too. I must not be as disciplined as you are. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Pat - how could you walk away without buying anything?? I couldn't do it. Even if, like you, I'm trying to downsize a bit. (Not that that stops me buying books!)
ReplyDeleteThis is the sort of place that is like heaven on earth for me.
One of these days I'm going to have to come to Brooklyn and we'll take a walk through some of the charming neigborhoods you show so lovingly on your blog. :)
Looks like a treasure chest. V
ReplyDeleteI could get lost in a place like that for hours! Looks like a great time in Williamsburg.
ReplyDeleteOh that place looks so intriguing! I hear the kids talking about apps, but it's all lost on me...so far.
ReplyDeletePat I can feel the energy of the area through your photos. And thanks for all that app info, I may need it someday! Even if I don't buy I do enjoy roaming around thrift shops. It's like a step back in time, or visit to my childhood, if not the early days of our marriage!
ReplyDeleteI could spend a lot of time browsing in this place. It's always interesting to see something that you have in your kitchen cupboard in a thrift or antique shop.
ReplyDeletePat, this looks like a fun place to snoop around. Like you, I'm working at not bringing more things into our home. I'm not completely there yet, but I'm making progress. LOL
ReplyDeleteThat certainly looks like a great and fun area to visit. Thanks for giving links to the Williamsburg flea markets and vintage shops – we may go there when we are in New York in May.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to go shopping there, Pat, looks like fun!..Christine

ReplyDeleteHI Pat, what a neat neighborhood and shop. Looks like a fun place to look for treasures. Thanks for sharing the links and your photos. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteO my gosh,
ReplyDeleteI was in williamsburg Brooklyn in the 80's, it looked like a war zone, I was afraid. My friend had a wall paper mfg there.
Royal Handprints. He told me that years ago it was the heart of ole Vaudeville. I spoted a 1950's samsonite luggage. Loved the post.
glad to hear a high rose went in.
That would have been fun rummaging around in the garage. You were strong to resist buying. I see you are a tech savvy grandma. We saw a news item today about the lack of privacy connected with Android Apps. Some can access your email program and read emails,
ReplyDeleteThey have a lot of stuff to sell :-) hope they make more money :-) great pictures too, see lots of blue :-) Visiting from Blue Monday, hope that you can return the visit too.

I am sure I would have found a nice basket for my spring flower arrangements.
ReplyDeleteIn one of the designer magazines I noticed old luggage decorated and used for a coffee table.

OK, so exactly how long did you spend in that FAAAABULOUS collection of goodies?? I don't think I'd have been able to tear myself away very quickly ... but the longer I stayed, the more I'd want to buy!!!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to plunder around in there, too. It looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteI think I might have walked out of there with a vintage suitcase I spied under a table!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, thanks!
Robin
