The Barclays Center--Basketball is Coming To Brooklyn!

I was excited to see the progress of the new Barclays Center basketball arena today, that is under construction in Brooklyn, New York. The arena is intended to serve as the new home for the National Basketball Association's New Jersey Nets, currently based at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The team will be renamed the Brooklyn Nets starting with the arena's expected opening season of 2012–13.This move would mark the return of major league sports to Brooklyn, which has been absent since the departure of the beloved Dodgers baseball team that moved to Los Angeles in 1957.

Located at the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues, the Barclays Center is in close proximity to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and the Brooklyn Museum. It is within easy walking distance from several neighborhoods, such as Park Slope and Fort Greene

The Barclays Center is also located on top of one of the largest public transit hubs in New York, with many subway and bus lines and the Long Island Railroad in close proximity.

I am excited to know that I'll soon be able to see not only basketball games, so close to home, but I'll also have the
opportunity to see other world class entertainers such as Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli's upcoming December performance.   With approximately 18,000 seats for basketball and up to 19,000 seats for concerts, 100 luxury suites, four bars/lounges, three clubs, and a restaurant, the Barclays Center will certainly be a wonderful asset for Brooklyn entertainment!

  2. Wow, this is exciting!! All of these new stadiums seem to look like spaceships...not that there's anything wrong with that!

  6. Looks like a great things are happening in Brooklyn.

We got a nice new world class facility a few years ago here in Tulsa and it has definitely made a difference in our life. Lots of concerts that we didn't used to get. The tea partiers are still muttering about it though.

  7. Sport arenas are nice cultural centers, too. I would be in heaven if I had tickets to see Andrea Bocelli! How lucky for you.

By the way, I gave my hairdresser your blog address. She visits New York quite often and LOVES the city.

    Thanks!

  9. This is exciting news for NY basketball fans. We have spent many nights watching the Knicks on tv. And I wonder if the Giants will ever come back to NY? I kept thinking during the Super Bowl this year that they are really the NJ Giants now, but no one besides me seems to notice that! Linda

  11. A new facility will open the doors to so many wonderful events in your future. I've never seen an NBA game but we love college basketball. Kansas City has the new Sprint Center and while we have no pro BB team the concerts that now come here are so wonderful.

  13. It is wonderful to see things grow and know that a whole new world will begin here with sports but also concerts like by Andrea Botticelli. Did you get tickets for the concert? Lucky you, he is so fantastic.

  14. Boo hoo Pat. Your gain is our loss. I am sorry to see the team leave New Jersey. I remember covering this story for Reuters when it was announced years ago. Is Ratner still involved in this? They gave us all canvas goodie bags with B-Ball painted on the side, and Brooklyn stuff inside including a Junior's cheesecake. That was worth it - and I still use the bag.

  22. I am SO jealous!! We used to have season tickets for the Nets once upon a time. But to be so close and within walking distance of museums and such. WOW!

  23. What?? Why wasn't I told? I had no idea the NJ Nets were moving to New York and being renamed? I think we should rename the football teams the New Jersey Giants and the New Jersey Jets. I'm still a Jersey girl at heart. :)
