Happy Saint Valentine's Day!

Happy Saint Valentine's Day!

My husband surprised me with 35 red roses, one for each years we've been married.

A rose blooms and then fades, but the memory and fragrance last forever"
~David Eddings

"There are many beautiful things, but the silent beauty of a flower surpasses them all"
~ Tishigahara

Tonight I'll make a special celebration dinner and we'll enjoy the special Daring Baker Challenge dessert I made, but you'll have to come back on February 28th to see what that is, as that is the date when all the Daring Bakers reveal their creations.

We celebrate Valentine's Day as a day of love and affection, but do you know the origins of the holiday and the Saint it was named after? I found a church in Dublin, Ireland that had some of the relics of Saint Valentine in an altar ( photo above) and I did a blog post about it with a synopsis of why this Saint's holy day became a day to celebrate love that you can read at this link

I'm participating in Beverly @ How Sweet The Sound "Pink Saturday Posts" and I'd like to wish a special day of happiness to her, and all the sweet ladies who join in each and every week with the vintage pink rose Valentine post card above!
Be sure to visit Beverly's blog today to see a list of all the blogs who are a part of Pink Saturday --there will be many pretty treats to enjoy!

It is free and nothing can hold it back"

Wow! your hubby's a keeper. I got a bouquet of roses, too, but the sentiment of 35, one for each year, well, that's special. We're eating in tonight as well. I have a small standing rib roast. Didn't do the DB challenge yet, so don't know what Larry will have for dessert.

We dine in on V day, too. I don't like crowds and there's nothing romantic about an overflowing restaurant and a long wait for a table. Hooray for hubby and the roses! Have a wonderful V Day with your loved ones.

Happy Valentines Day Pat. Your husband is a true romantic. 35 roses, wow, making both you and your local florist very happy...tee hee. A very sweet gesture and they are truly lovely. I also want to say thanks for sharing with us the Irish connection to St. Valentines day---wow, what an honour to find the actual Saint of this very romantic and special day, in Dublin of all places, but then, Ireland is a land full of magical surprises and history, as you've shown us in your blog posts on that enchanted isle--- and lastly a Happy First Valentines Day to Leo and sweet sugary hugs and kisses to your precious little grandson.

Hi Pat, thanks for posting the link to the origin of V Day...I had lunch with a friend yesterday and she claimed it was nothing more then a Hallmark created holiday....I thought to myself, that's dumb ofcourse it wasn't created by hallmark....So I sent her the link so she can get a bit educated....Your flowers are beautiful....as I have told everyone so far that got real Valetines Day goodies....I got from the Boss four tires for the Bug and a new battery...so much for romance...

Happy Anniversary!! I stumbled upon your blog and noticed this post with the picture of St. Valentine's alter with his relics from Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin.

On our honeymoon in Ireland in 2001(our annv. is in Feb too), my hub and i happened upon this church and this alter. We were shocked to find something so holy, especially in such a tormented culture as the Irish have, what with the Catholics in great competition with the Protestants. We had visited this church on Feb 15th, and you should have seen the roses upon roses upon roses placed around this alter. They say a special Mass here each Valentine's Day and the young lovers flock, leaving the rosy evidence of their presence. It was quite moving, and very special!

Recently, someone mentioned to me that St. Valentine was "striped"of his sainthood with that last batch of saints, (like St. Christopher, et al.) siting there wasn't "sufficient proof" of their "saintliness". Have you heard of such a thing?
