The New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show

I went to The New York Botanical Garden ninth annual orchid show this weekend.  This year's show theme "The Orchid Show: On Broadway," was designed by Tony award-winning set designer Scott Pask and image-maker Drew Hodges, and takes place in the dramatic galleries of the landmark Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.

The "Orchid Show: On Broadway" showcases 5,000 dazzling specimens of orchids from one of the most distinguished orchid collections in the world.

Over 300 types of orchids are displayed in dramatic curtains, arcades, and chandeliers, all under the domes of America's largest glass greenhouse.

The orchid displays were spectacular!

One was more exquisite than the next.

This giant orchid chandelier was inspired by the original that hung in the Eltinge Theater on 42 Street in Manhattan, once a famous venue for the comedy team Abbott and Costello.

\
There were so many wondrous orchids that making a photo collage of them seemed the best way to show almost all of them to you.  Click on all photos once, and then again when they reopen, to see more details.

Some macro close ups of the orchids.

Click to enlarge to read this informational placard about orchids.

Broadway tunes were playing in some of the greenhouse's galleries which added to the festivity of the exhibit.

It was a magical feeling to be surrounded by such exotic and fragrant orchids as far as the eye could see!

“The Orchid Show: On Broadway” remains on display through April 25, 2011.  The New York Botanical Garden is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard, Bronx, New York.

PS: We are still waiting for news of our newest grandson.  His brother was born nine days after his due date, so it seems the younger brother wants to do the same! My daughter-in-law is more than ready to go, but it seems babies don't read calendars.  Thank you all for your wonderful comments and support! I'll be back with the good news as soon as we hear!

Adding this post to Mary's Mosaic Monday on her blog Little Red House! Thanks, Mary!  Be sure to look at Mary's beautiful mosaic and all the links on her page to participating blogs.

What a stunningly beautiful display. I saw a blue one Thursday...actually blue. I've never seen a blue one. You must have felt like you were snapping pics like crazy to get so many different orchids for us to see. Well done!

It is gratifying to see Mother Nature's handiwork at her most exquisite. The chandelier astounds. Minnesota's state flower is an orchid known as the ladyslipper. Huge, showy and it takes many year to grow. When they emerge - it is in surprising spots always by water. You know it's around when there are cars parked at the side of the road and there's a crowd gathered at the side of the road.

I love orchids, they remind me of Spring, and in particular Easter. My dad would buy each of his four daughters and mom a corsage with an orchid, of course mom's was a little grander than ours! This is such a lovely post.

Your photos are beautiful. This must have been stunning to see in person. When I lived in Philly, one of our clients was a Dr. who played with the Philly Pops. He had a collection of orchids on his rooftop greenhouse, it was amazing. Best wishes to your daughter, hope that grandbaby arrives soon! Kat

Amazing! Thank you for sharing your day trip to the Orchid Show. I can only imagine what fun it would be to see these gorgeous orchids in person and to listen to the Broadway tunes.

(I'm sorry that your little grand is holding out. Of course, I had to ask my sister...she's somewhere in your fair state...a maternity nurse working that night...14 babies born on the full moon! She said that it was absolutely nuts and she didn't have anything nice to say about the super moon nor did she want to see my pictures. Imagine that!)

Oh, I hate to wait for those little ones. Mine were all late too! Good luck and how wonderful.

What a show! I am absolutely blown away, I want to go soooo badly. The displays are just mind boggling. I can't believe the lush curtains of flowers and the colors. Everything is just exquisite. I was so excited to see the orchids in DC and they were pathetic compared to this. I am so glad you shared your amazing visit.

How lovely, Pat! I'm fascinated by orchids. I received a moth orchid as a gift more than 2 years ago and it's still going strong - all luck of course, for I hadn't had the first clue about how to care for them. People who visit me always think it's fake.
