A series of sculptures called "The Roses" can be seen along the traffic malls on Park Avenue in Manhattan, between 57th and 67th streets from January 25th through May 31st, 2011.
The Paul Kasmin Gallery, in conjunction with New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Fund for the Park Avenue Sculpture Committee, is funding the display of Will Ryman’s 38 sculptures of rose blossoms towering as high as 25 feet, complimented by 20 individual scattered rose petals,
I took these photos during the last week in February, right before I went on my trip to Sydney, Australia, (which you can read about on this link) so the pretty roses have a sugarcoating of fresh snow that fell that morning.
The gallery web site states:
"The Roses will present viewers with a sculptural tribute
to the larger than life qualities of New York City."
"Colossal blossoms ranging from five to ten feet in diameter at the bud will spring up from steel stems in eight clusters of four to six rose buds each. Drawing inspiration from nature’s cycles and seasons, each cluster is complete with an inhabiting brass ladybug, aphid, beetle or bee for an element of both reality and humor in reference to the viewers’ own bug’s-eye-view of The Roses’ gigantic blossoms."

The large colorful pink roses certainly helped to brighten the winter landscape!

The New York City Parks and Recreation web site states that "the exhibition is meant to be fun and playful." Seeing this beautiful sculptural rose display certainly put a smile on my face, and I hope it will do the same for you!
PS: I'm still waiting for our second grandson's birth! My daughter-in-law and son feel that this weekend's "Super Perigee Moon" might encourage that to happen. You can see more about this event on this video:

I know with the Blog day of silence I'm probably not supposed to be commenting but I just love the Rose sculptures in New York. Have a great weekend. Hope that baby comes soon.
Now that certainly is the kind of sculpture that this old gal can appreciate. It did make me smile and I am sure that it brightened those winter days.
Come on, Perigree Moon and do your thing! I did take note of the moon last night through the mists. Amazing what one can see late at night while out walking a dog.

Pat - those roses complete with the bugs are so playful I cannot stand it. These are times when New York "gets it right!"

What beautiful sculptures to brighten up the city in winter. The snow frosted ones look great. The bugs are neat too.
The waiting game is exciting and worrying all at the same time. Hope all goes well. The video didn't make an appearance on my screen.

So glad you had great temps in Brooklyn today! Ours were as warm as yesterday, but they were still keepers! We took our grand girl bowling for the first time!! She's a natural at Bumper Bowling...she beat her grandpa! Ha! It was awesome!
I was hoping I'd read that that your little #2 Grand Boy had arrived. Maybe his mom and dad are right...perhaps the Perigee Moon will be his entrance cue!

The roses provide a nice contrast to the gray buildings. I imagine they would make most people smile. You commented on the perfect condition of my coverlet. It's not in perfect shape. There are some holes here and there but it's still a real treasure since it's at least 150 years old and is handwoven. Thanks for your comments Pat!

I saw them on the Sunday news!! They had the artist on as well, annd he thought the big blossoms with the snow was a fabulous reminder that spring will come!! How awesome that you live right there!! I am 2 hours away, and we go to the city when we can, but not as often as we used to, kids have so many plans and sports, and the hubby works too much, ugh.

Love the huge roses with snow on them! "Larger than life" concept of the roses to show NYC off is perfect. I lived 150 miles from NYC for almost half my life, loved taking the bus to the city and walking everywhere. Have not been in years and years. Seeing these delightful roses sure made me miss NYC.
