I thought everyone would like to see the progress of the new One World Trade Center building undergoing construction in Lower Manhattan. Eventually it will soar a symbolic 1,776 feet skyward to become America's tallest building.
Just a few blocks away is Zuccotti Park. Its clean and empty now.
You may remember this park as being occupied by the "Occupy Wall Street" movement. The park was emptied by the NYPD in November due to concerns about sanitation. Later that day the New York Supreme Court issued an injunction against allowing protesters to camp or sleep in Zuccotti Park from then on.
If you take a walk along Broadway, also known as the "Canyon of Heroes" in Lower Manhattan, you will see metal strips in the sidewalk that tell you the year, the name of the person(s) and their accomplishments that were honored with a ticker tape parade! In the last one hundred years there have been over two hundred ticker tape parades. As the person of honor's motorcade winds up the Canyon of Heroes, a blizzard of confetti and shredded paper is dropped down from the tall buildings on either side of the street. When they reach City Hall the mayor presents the honored guest(s) with a proclamation, a medal, a scroll, or a key to the city. New York City has bestowed this unique tribute on champion athletes, pioneers of air and space travel, soldiers, sailors, sea captains, firemen, heads of state, politicians, journalists, and a virtuoso pianist.
Perhaps the next ticker tape parade will honor this team when they win the National Football League's XLVI Superbowl! Go Giants!
Edited 2/5/12: The Giants won the Superbowl! Their NYC Ticker Tape Parade will be held on 2/7/12. Congratulations New York Giants!
I'm linking with the following blog events: Mosaic Monday, Blue Monday and Our World Tuesday. Thanks to all the hosts!

I always enjoy your shots from the city. Nice info about the ticker tape parades and how the names are recorded in the walk way.
Great shots and a nice update. I took my kids out of school one time just so they could experience a ticker tape parade!
Always fun to visit with you. I enjoyed reading about the ticker tape parades and the "Canyon of Heroes".
Pat, thanks for the beautiful update. I remember watching the ticker tape parade for John Glenn. I've never actually know the history behind this parade. You are forever teaching me something new.
Good luck to the Giants. ;-)

PS
I sent an email earlier. Did you receive it?
Love NY even though I only see it through your eyes! Someday.....
Fingers crossed, I hope we get a parade, it's an exciting game! Have to say that Zuccotti Park looks so vivid and colorful when you take the pictures.
The One World Trade Centre building looks like it is going to be a remarkable landmark.

Those tall towers reaching to the sky are stunning. And I love the idea of the metal strips in the sidewalk. NY really knows how to do things right!
great photos Pat, nice to see the progress on the new building and learn all the other remarkable things about Manhattan!
GIANTS WON!!!!! Yeah... I love Eli and Peyton Manning... Awesome Game!!! Hope you make it to the ticker tape parade...
Glad they cleared those nasty protesters from the park... I am not very sympathetic toward them.. I want them to put their emphasis on getting a JOB....
Hugs,
Betsy
Wonderfully informative post with nice images.
Thanks for the update! Awesome shots!
What A Sky
Get ready for the parade - Big Blue rules, rocks and everything else!!!! Yes, we do it BIG and we do it right! xo
ha! Well it looks like you will get your parade! Enjoy. I always enjoy your city views Pat.
We just finished watching the Super bowl and we rooted for your Giants! What a GREAT game! YAY! Giants! ♥♥♥
I think there is a parade already being planned right now, Pat. Enjoy the celebration. :-)
Great pictures and we get a parade. Love those Giants!
I love seeing the construction!!
This is such a nice post, Pat, so nice to see things getting back to normal for NYC. The tower is a welcome sight, I'm sure and the "Occupy" people, well, what can I say. Our city was very kind to them for a long, long time, but the day came when they had to go. I stand behind our city officials, they are in office to make these decisions, aren't they.
Great photos! Your photos are always wonderful!
Have a wonderful week, dear friend.
Hugs, Cindy
I knew a little bit about the ticker tape parades but had never heard that there were commemorative markers. Thanks for the info and of course the photos!
I've seen movies with ticker tape parades, the old black and white ones of course:) That's a nice park, glad they got the scum out of it....and thanks again for a peek at NY!
Nice to see all the places which I know only from TV
Love the ticker tape on the pavement!! I'll probably annoy people stopping and reading these if I were there! LOL!!
Take care
x
Yep, I'm sure the parade is already planned! Congrats to the Giants, it was a fun game:@)
interesting to see these shots! My husband sold aluminum to build the rail system under the new trade center! I'll have to show him this post.
Thanks for the update Pat. It's really going to be something once it's completed.
Sam
This was great to see, Pat! Pity about Zuccotti Park...I've been following the Occupy Wall Street with much interest. If I was there, I'd be camping! ;o) Fun to see the Canyone of Heros too. I didn't know about this! Happy Week ((HUGS))
You are going to get that chance for the Giants!! Great game. And great photos as always, Pat!! Here's hoping for a Ticker Tape Parade for your team! blessings ~ Tanna
ps we'll want photos! ;)
I love to visit with your and see your wonderful photographs from around the city. You share such wonderful tidbits. Love the park is clean again!

Nice to see the updates - I was there in June and it is really progressing!
That's the first view I've seen of the new tower. What a mood-lifter it will be for one and all.
Yes indeed--a reason for a NYC ticker tape parade! Thanks for the update as the tower continues to rise.
Best,
Bonnie
We were so happy to see NY Giants win. Chris Snee is fom our town!!
Hey, now it is time for NASCAR & NY Yankees games in April!! WOO HOO!!
Have a Great Day!
Marilyn
I think you're right. The Giants will have a tickertape shower.
It is good to see the building going up. Very.
"Our" park is being cleared today. Finally. That's about all I have to say about that.
And I will be strolling those blocks at the end of March. Cannot wait.
The park certainly looks better! :)
Can't wait to see that building completed. Love that it's going to be the tallest, too.
Wow, I love that little garden of decorative cabbage. I really need to plant some of those. I forget every year. Hope you have a beautiful week Pat!
It's good to see the building progressing. When you approach it from New Jersey, it almost startles you now that it's getting so high.
It is so interesting to see the updates and progress of the new building Pat and it is good to hear that the park is clean and empty again. We had those young occupy people in some cities too but most are gone now. It is so cold these days and nights, about -15* celsius they would freeze to death. I heard about the ticker tape parade when I was still in high school , several Dutch people did get the treat as well.
Have a nice week.
Thanks for the update, I love seeing the progress.
I watch Blue Bloods....last week Tom Selleck was standing at the memorial when show ended and it is just so touching. Don't think they could have designed anything more perfect!
Love all of your blues! I'm sure that the Giants will be honored with a parade. (I rooted for them too.)
Happy Blue Monday, Pat.
This is such a blast from my past!! When I first started working in NY, I worked at Merrill Lynch which was at One Liberty Plaza. It was not known as Zuccoti Park at that time. It never ceases to amaze me how everything in the city changes and yet looks exactly the same. It is getting to be time for me to visit the area again. Thank you for these pictures Pat.
♥, Susan
Those are gorgeous!
My Blue
Pretty post. I really like those purple and white flowers. Have a great week!
Love these pics.
Thanks so much for the World Trade Center update, Pat! I will be beautiful.
I'm also happy that the Giants won since they knocked our Packers out in the playoffs!
There are so many special things about your city that I would have NO idea about if not for you! Love the metal strips commemorating the ticker tape parades. On congrats on your hometown team being the big winners! Hope to see photos of THAT parade. :)
They really have made much progress since I saw the building last fall. Thanks for the update.
Thank you for sharing this interesting post about Zuccotti Park! New York must be a source of historic facts dating from the 17th century. I have never been there but my eldest daughter has for her work.
Thanks for your congratulations!
superbe serie sur le Lower Manhattan et le Canyon Of Heros. Et une Belle semaine avec la victoire des Giants

Pat, Thank you for the info and the pictures. It's as if you are my own personal guide thru n.y.c. Love it.:):) Smiles to you, Susie
I was just interested in noting the irony of the scenes, i.e. world trade center and Zucotti park and the fact that the one world trade center is 1776 feet tall.
I was under the impression that the one of the rights that the revolution embraced in 1776 was the freedom of speech.
LOVE LOVE LOVE~
Always such beautiful pictures...
Smiles~

Nice shots - now we want to see photos of the Giants parade!
Perfect day for the Giants parade.
The weather has been wonderful!
Hope you are doing ok, Pat.
Zucotti Park is actually private property and that is the key problem in this matter of free speech.
Here is a perspective. Now, I have no interest in this, simply intellectual actually. Thought you might like to note why the matter is so complicated. It seems the city did not do part of its job in this case.
The bigger legal obstacle for Brookfield (owner of the park) and the City of New York is that the former has no standing to dictate any rules for use of the Park and the latter has no authority to obstruct 24-hour use of the space for political expression. “use and jurisdiction” of the space was ceded to the city by United States Steel when it received permission from the city to build the skyscraper across the street now owned by Brookfield. Accordingly, the governance of the public’s use is overseen by the NYC Department of CIty Planning and any rule change are subject to a public hearing process that requires a minimum 45 day review period. No such rule change proposal seems to have been formally made to or acted on by the Department or Amanda Burden, the Director fo the Department of CIty Planning.
I always learn something here Pat. I didn't know about the ticker tape parades and the metal strips in the road.
I am so amazed at how the tower has grown since we were there last summer. It is such a magnificent building.
So...I guess the ticker tape parade was today! Glad your Giants won the Superbowl.
Interesting to see where the 'occupy wall street' protest took place. The site of the Vanocuver protest is also empty...but will need some landscaping work done come springtime.
Do you know - I never really knew what the ticker tape parade was! Thank you for explaining. It is lovely indeed to see the progress on the One World Trade Center. I went up to the top of one of the twin towers in 1990 and have a beautiful series of photographs of scenes that will never be taken again.
Oh, thank's for sharing about the updates.
Visiting for Blue Monday! Hope you can stop by:)
