Breakfast Challenge

The scene:

The menu challenge:

The first serving:

The brave soul who thinks he could eat all of this:

What finally did him in:

The story:

My daughter and her friends like to go to a popular restaurant in their neighborhood for breakfast on the weekend, and one young man in the group thought he would be able to handle the "Breakfast Challenge" on the menu without any problem. The challenge states that if you can eat in its entirety one order of french toast, one order of pancakes, one cheese omelet, one order each of bacon, ham and sausage, and one large order of home fries, plus a glass of juice, cup of coffee or tea, and a glass of water the meal would be free, otherwise it would cost $ 24.95
I went along to take pictures of this momentous event. Everything was going quite well until a platter of about five pounds of home fried potatoes was placed in front of the hungry gentleman, and his face proceeded to turn a few shades of pale.
Try as he would the potatoes did him in, and he threw in the towel.
Score another victory for Puritan Restaurant, and an expensive lesson on human limitations for my daughter's friend.
Don't worry though, as those potatoes did not go to waste. They were boxed to take home and the brave fellow ate them for lunch!
Ah, to be young and optimistic ... and hungry!
ETA: A few readers have asked if anyone was able to complete this challenge? We did ask the same question to the chef that day, and he told us that only one man did, and he was there from 6 am till almost 4pm to do it! There is no time limit so they allowed that. Crazy way to spend a day, but I guess a challenge is a challenge! Thanks, everyone for your comments!

What a fun story! My mouth just gaped at the prices and that's before I saw $24.95! Awww, too bad that he was done in by the potatoes.

Hi Pat!
What fun! Isn't it great to be that optimistic? I can't believe he could eat any lunch!! But thank goodness he didn't let those fabulous looking potatoes go to waste. Nothin' like a big country breakfast in the city!!

Oh! P.S.,
The Mark Twain is a Paddle Boat. I'll try to take a picture of it next time. Let's say, two weeks from now.

OMG! I love breakfast but that just about made me sick! That is soooo much food!! I can't believe he got as far as he did. I'm wondering if there is a time limit...my husband would have sat there all day to get all that food in! I think his favorite word is free! How funny. Pat here is the most information I found on the Etsy lab/headquarters...of course you are right, they are in Brooklyn the site is http://www.etsy.com/storque/section/etsyNews/article/all-about-etsy-faq-series-welcome-to-the-etsy-labs/936/. They have open craft night on I think mondays...that would be so fun.

How funny! My BIL tried one of these dinner challenges many years ago. I thought he would do it but, at the end, he was a hurting puppy!!

The photos were such fun. Great read!!

Sue

That all looks so good, although, you know, not at the same time ;)

The potatoes would've done me in too. There's just so much!

P.S. I sent you an email way back on the 27th of March but it may have gotten caught up in your spam; I resent just now, so hopefully you get it!

... with a fried egg on top do you think? Great story. I would love to come to the US, purely for the excuse of having something sweet for breakfast. My other half cannot understand why I want sweet things at that time of day, as when we go out, he has a full English breakfast, and will expect me to have one too, although to be honest I would rather have the pancakes and syrup! Don't get me wrong I enjoy my food, but I do think all this idea of supersizing every meal is getting out of hand, extra chips, large coke etc, etc. I know you can say no, but they try and tempt you nevertheless. x

Oh my! When I read the menu for this challenge in your photo, I thought, "There's no way anyone could eat all this." And sure enough, your story proved the point. It makes my stomach hurt just to think about it. Bless his heart for trying and I'm glad the potatoes didn't go to waste.
