Yankee Ticker Tape Parade!

Please Click On To Enlarge

My husband works in lower Manhattan, not far from the portion of Broadway known as the "Canyon of Heroes" because of the almost 200 ticker tape parades held there from the 1880's onward. He went over to the Yankee baseball team's ticker tape parade celebrating their 27th win of the World Series. Luckily, early in the morning, he was able to take a few photos of the floats and vintage cars that would be used to transport the players up Broadway from the Battery to City Hall, where the mayor would give all the players keys to the city.
He went back later when the parade began, and the hundreds of thousands of people who came there almost completely blocked his view! The crowds roared, church bells rang, and although ticker tape is no longer used anymore, as technology has advanced, streams of all kinds of shredded office paper rained down from the windows of many of the buildings lining the route. It was definitely an exciting sight!

Congratulations to the New York Yankees...and on to winning number 28!

How cool is that, he works right there! I bet no one got any work done that day! It looked like everyone was having the best time, NY really knows how to celebrate with a parade! Love this weeks mosaic!

Pat, your mosaic is wonderful and I congratulate the Yankees and all of NY on the big accomplishment. My friends fly out Wed for a long weekend in the Big Apple - I also head home to San Francisco that day. I would hate to be here in Columbus without them.

That was a great mosaic and a great idea. I am so glad they won again. I love to see a long string of wins. Even though my team is the Nets.

How fun is this post? (I'm whispering so that my DH's relatives in Philly don't disown me lol). We lived in Philly when they won the World Series in 80 and I'll never forget the parade (or Tug McGraw, bless his heart). Great pictures, thanks to your husband for sharing them with us. Kathy

Pat - There is nothing like a NYC tickertape parade. I went to a couple of them for the Yankees in the 90s when I worked on Water St. This year, my daughter got to greet each and every Yankee inside City Hall after the parade (her friend works for the mayor). At one point, she and Joe Girardi and his son went rummaging through City Hall to try to find the son a burger.

Great pictures Pat. The last time I was in New York for a ticker tape parade, we were using those gigantic print out sheets, shredded, from the computers. I think it was 1978? I was at the game when Reggie Jackson hit all of those home runs..it was all very exciting...and now? It is just as exciting, but I like to view the parade from the TV in our den:)

Can't be over exuberant about the Yankees (I'm from Cleveland you know) But they are a great team! Your mosaic is interesting. My daughter loves NYC and lived there for 6 mo. but couldn't make a go of it, way too expensive and she couldn't get a good enough bar tending job to survive. She came home just 5 weeks before 9/11, which was a blessing. She would've been terrified since she was there alone!

Boohoo, won't that ever be my Rangers in a world series champions parade????? Well, in the meantime, congrats to your Yankees! Gotta admit, I'm a big Mark Texiera and Andy Pettit fan. How many weeks until spring training starts? I live for baseball!

Great photos Pat. My daughter and her friend went into NYC to see the parade. I arranged for them to stay overnight in the Embassy downtown, so that they would surely see it all. This is their first NYC parade and I know that they were impressed. Even though my daughter's friend is from Massachusetts, she is a Yankees fan, and it was her birthday too. She was thrilled, and so was I that they could see New York on such a fun day.

Nothing like an old-fashioned NYC ticker tape parade. So cool that your husband could be there Pat--and what pretty weather for a parade too.

I want to thank you for your kind words and prayers for my mom, they are so appreciated.

Wonderful collection of photos. My friend was reminiscing (sorry about the wrong spelling) about when she was in high school during the last Yankee Ticker Tape Parade and she played hooky with her friends to go to the parade. Turned out she was on T.V. AND her mom saw her. LOL! Boy, was her mom upset that day. ;-)

P.S. Love the marathon photos below, too.
